Last Time the ACC Had No Teams In the Final Four, Elite Eight

College basketball is undergoing a shift, a new era ushered in by the transfer portal, NIL and conference realignment. The Ramblers had to go back to 1984-85 for their last ranking before returning at No. 22 on Feb. 8, 2021.

Historically speaking, the ACC is a staple of the men’s Final Four.

That’s at least partially thanks to Duke and North Carolina, both of which rank quite highly on the list of most men’s basketball Final Four appearances.

But even beyond Tobacco Road, the ACC has generally represented itself quite well in college basketball, with recent Final Four runs by NC State (2024) and Miami (2023).

This year could be a departure from the historical pattern. Duke is the last remaining ACC team in the tournament, and while the Blue Devils still rate highly in BetMGM’s March Madness odds market, it doesn’t take a professional analyst to see that their injury concerns are threatening their tournament viability.

If Duke loses before the Final Four, it’ll be the first time in several years that the ACC will be left without a representative in the national semifinals.

The ACC missed the Final Four in 2021. Before that, it also crashed out of the tournament without a Final Four team in 2018 and 2014.

The ACC completely missed the Elite Eight in 2021 and 2014, too.
