In college basketball’s conference tournament season, it’s typical for high seeds (like a No. 1 or a No. 2) to win the tournament and low seeds (like a No. 8 or a No. 12) to lose early.
Every once in a while, though, something bizarre happens. A bad team gets hot and plays its way to the conference championship game. Sometimes, it might even win.
These low-seed championships are rare things. And as conferences expand, there is now the potential for truly record-breaking runs to the NCAA Tournament.
Lowest Seed to Ever Win a Men’s Basketball Conference Tournament
So far, the lowest seed to ever win a Division I conference basketball tournament is a No. 10 seed.
Most recently, this happened in 2024, when No. 10 NC State won the ACC title and reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four.
In 2006, Xavier also won the Atlantic 10 as a No. 10 seed.
There have also been a smattering of No. 8 and No. 9 seeds to win their conferences over the years. Most recently, there was No. 8 seed Texas Southern, which won the SWAC Tournament in 2023 and was instantly in the running for the worst record to ever make the NCAA Tournament.
