- Michigan vs. UConn tips off at 8:50 p.m. ET on TBS.
- Michigan is the team whose metrics are in line with classic national champions.
- Dan Hurley is great, but the Wolverines may be simply too good to outcoach.
The 2026 college basketball season is down to its final game.Â
With the men’s semifinals played on Saturday night, and the women’s championship decided on Sunday, the only game left to play is Monday night’s men’s championship showdown between No. 1 seed Michigan and No. 2 seed UConn.
If Michigan wins – as the college basketball odds market expects – it’ll be the first Big Ten men’s basketball champion in a quarter-century.Â
If the Huskies can play their way to an upset, it’ll cement Connecticut as the undisputed capital of modern-era college basketball.Â

Michigan vs. UConn: National Championship Preview
I’m searching for any area of the on-court matchup where UConn might have some kind of advantage.Â
It’s a struggle.
UConn has succeeded during this tournament largely on the back of Tarris Reed’s excellent play near the basket. But with Michigan’s excellent front court size and depth, the Wolverines present a near-perfect defensive counter to UConn’s traditional front court offense.
Overall, Michigan is the much deeper team. It blew out Arizona on Saturday night with its best player, Yaxel Lendeborg, not available at 100% after an early ankle injury.Â
And I’ve pointed this out all season, but I’ll underline it again now – Michigan’s statistical profile as a top-5 team in both adjusted offensive and adjusted defense is in line with elite national champions of previous seasons.Â
UConn does rank in the top 10 on defense but is outside the top 20 for adjusted offensive efficiency.
The best argument for UConn here is that head coach Dan Hurley is the best leader in the sport right now, and he’ll just find a way to make the right moves on the floor and eke out a win against a superior team. But Michigan’s roster is just too good for clever coaching to make up the difference.
Plus, Dusty May took Florida Atlantic to the Final Four three years ago. He’s not exactly a junior varsity coach.Â
Michigan vs. UConn: Prediction
I am predicting a Michigan win and cover in Monday’s national championship game.
Maybe Lendeborg will be fully good to go tonight; maybe he’ll be playing reduced minutes at less than 100%. Regardless, Michigan is clearly the better team, and I expect they’ll seize control of this game in the second half and win the championship with an exclamation mark.Â
Michigan vs. UConn Prediction: Michigan -6.5
