The Big 12 college basketball tournament is being played in downtown Kansas City at T-Mobile Center.

On paper, this is a neutral venue, which is in line with what most high-major college basketball conferences do. The Big East, for example, plays its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

However, since the Big 12 has been dominated by Kansas for much of the last two decades, some Big 12 fans snidely refer to the Big 12 tournament as the Kansas Invitational.

Then again, maybe Kansas’ conference tournament advantage has been overstated. The Jayhawks have won at least a share of the regular season title in 21 of the 27 seasons that have been played since Big 12 basketball was born; however, they’ve only ever won the Big 12 tournament 12 times.

The Big 12 tournament has been held in Kansas City for more than a decade, though it did bounce back and forth between Dallas and Oklahoma City a few times in the mid-2000s.
