It’s been a rough season for the New York Giants. After a tough-luck loss in Kansas City Monday night, Big Blue has dropped to 2-6. On Sunday, the Giants welcome the Las Vegas Raiders to the Meadowlands.
The Giants are home underdogs this week, according to the latest NFL odds. Home-field advantage has not been a significant factor for New York thus far in the Daniel Jones era. The Giants are just 5-12 since he took over as the starter in 2019 (they are 5-13 on the road during that same stretch).
What should bettors expect on Sunday from Daniel Jones and the Giants’ offense?
No Home Cooking
Surprisingly, Jones’ individual statistics have been better away from MetLife Stadium. Since 2019, Jones has thrown 27 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the road, compared with 15 touchdowns and 19 interceptions at home.
2021 has followed the pattern of the previous two seasons, as Daniel Jones has failed to establish consistency at home. The Giants got their first home win in Week 7 against Carolina, but their season mark is just 1-3 in the Meadowlands. Through four home games, New York is averaging around 16 points per game.
This season, Daniel Jones has better away numbers, tossing five touchdowns on the road versus just two at home over the same number of games. Jones has completed 64% of his passes which ranks 24th in the league. This number is even lower at home, where he has completed 62.82% of all passes.
Part of New York’s home struggles may be due to the competition. Two of the Giant’s home games were against formidable defenses: the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams. This might be negatively skewing their home offensive stats.
Can the Giants find some rhythm on offense against the Raiders in Week 9?
New York Giants: All Injury Team
New York has dealt with a slew of injuries this season. Key offensive contributors have seen limited action, including Saquon Barkley, Kadarius Toney, Kenny Golladay, and Sterling Shepard.
This has placed added strain on Daniel Jones and limited his ability to establish a rapport with his receivers. As a result, only one of New York’s receivers has over 30 receptions this season.
It will be worth monitoring the Giants’ injury report this week to see which players are active Sunday. The Giants have a dangerous receiving corps that will unquestionably help Jones and the passing game when healthy.
Raiders vs. Giants: Preview
The Raiders have been efficient on offense this season. They enter Week 9 second in passing yards per game. However, the Vegas defense has ranged more middle of the pack, allowing 23.7 points per game. This is not a lockdown defense.
The Raiders will test the Giants’ offensive line, but if New York can establish the run game early, they should buy Daniel Jones more time in the pocket. The Giants have shown they can put up points against mid-tier defenses with an impressive recent showing against Carolina at home.
The Raiders will be well-rested after their bye week, so the Giants will want to jump on them early. If the Giants can build an early lead, they can take some of the heat off Daniel Jones and follow the Week 7 blueprint.
Can New York Make It Two in a Row at Home?
After a tough first half, the New York Giants look to turn it around with an eye towards the future. Establishing better offensive consistency at home is a big step in the right direction.
An improving Giants squad at home against Las Vegas makes an exciting candidate for BetMGM’s King of the Weekend promo.
