When looking at team records, it’s essential to differentiate between their straight-up record and their record against the spread (ATS). Keep this in mind when making your Week 9 NFL ATS picks. I’ll be taking a closer look at three underdogs who have a chance to cover the spread in this week’s NFL odds.
- Minnesota Vikings (+6) at Baltimore Ravens
- Los Angeles Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles (+1.5)
- Tennessee Titans (+7.5) at Los Angeles Rams
Read on to learn about the NFL expert picks ATS for Week 9.
Minnesota Vikings (+6) At Baltimore Ravens
The Vikings had a dud of a performance against the Cowboys on national television in Week 8, and now Mike Zimmer may be coaching for his job. The Vikings are underdogs, but Mike Zimmer’s teams thrive in these situations. Zimmer is 33-16 ATS when his teams are coming off a loss.
The Vikings’ defense couldn’t stop Cooper Rush on Sunday, and it’s unlikely they’re able to stop Lamar Jackson. Baltimore’s scoring power may not be a problem, though, because Minnesota’s offense tends to perform better when they have to keep up with the opposing offense.
In the three games in which the Vikings defense has given up 27+ points, the Vikings scored 24, 33, and 34 points. Because of their offensive production and the six points, I like the Vikings as one of the best NFL Week 9 picks ATS.
Los Angeles Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles (+1.5)
The Chargers have had some significant injuries on their offensive line, and the team’s play has fallen off a bit as a result. RG Oday Aboushi tore his ACL three weeks ago, and Bryan Bulaga hasn’t played since the second game.
The Chargers have now lost two games in a row and have to travel to Philadelphia to take on an Eagles team that beat the Lions by 38 points.
Detroit needed a win badly in that game, but that didn’t matter as the Eagles rushed for 235 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles run game will be a problem for the Chargers run defense, which ranks 32nd in the NFL in rush yards allowed per game.
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ offense racked up stats during garbage time through the first half of the season, but they should flourish for a full 60 minutes this week. Expect the Eagles to wage war against a weak Chargers defense and control the time of possession.
Tennessee Titans (+7.5) At Los Angeles Rams
The Derrick Henry injury impacted this spread. With Henry out, the Titans just lost the NFL’s leading rusher, and they will try to replace him with the 36-year old Adrian Peterson.
The Titans’ offense has been heavily dependent on Henry, but Tennesee’s offensive line deserves credit for providing the blocking that allowed Henry to rack up 937 rushing yards in eight games. If the offensive line can continue to perform as it has, the Titans may get production out of any running back they use in place of Henry.
Reviewing the Best Underdog NFL ATS Picks for Week 9
The Vikings, Eagles, and Titans may not win on Sunday, but they should cover the spread. That’s what counts when you’re making NFL picks ATS. So look for these three teams to present a challenge to their favored opponents.
