It’s almost always easier to win a game at home, but that’s not always the case. Although home-field advantage is typically factored into betting lines, Week 9 of the NFL promises to be an exciting week that might result in some surprises, as a few of the NFL away teams cover or even win outright.
Curious about what’s to come in Week 9 and which away teams might surprise the oddsmakers? Read on for a few of the away teams that might be worth your attention this week as you make your NFL betting picks.
Cleveland at Cincinnati (-3)
This game is essentially a coin flip. Both teams are evenly matched now, but if you look at preseason predictions for each team, Cleveland ranked higher than Cincinnati.
Cleveland proved that they could handle the pressure after their playoff run last year, and Cincinnati is more of an up-and-coming team. After last week’s embarrassing loss to the Jets, I’m unsure how the Bengals’ young roster will respond. I also believe that Baker Mayfield will look to redeem himself after a poor showing against Pittsburgh in their last game.
With the increasing expectations for Cincinnati, this is a game that they could let slip away.
Chicago at Pittsburgh (-6.5)
As Chicago’s quarterback, Justin Fields is improving every week, and Khalil Mack should be back this week, so expect points to be at a premium.
Pittsburgh is playing well now, but there are still question marks about their offense. Bettors might be more optimistic about the Steelers at the moment, but the jury is out about how good they are. So this line might be a little bit too high.
Tennessee at Los Angeles Rams (-7.5)
Yes, Derrick Henry is out, and that’s probably why the spread is this high to start with, but there are ten other players on offense. Henry is only one of them, and even though he’s their best player and an MVP-level talent, there’s a reason why the Titans are 6-2.
Don’t overlook Tennessee’s offensive line, wide receivers, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The offensive line and receivers block for Henry, so while the running game may decline a little, it will not entirely fall apart. Tannehill is also a competent quarterback with some excellent weapons around him.
The Dallas at Minnesota game in Week 8 is a perfect example of this. Dallas not only covered, but they won outright against the Vikings, at home, with a quarterback who had never started an NFL game before.
Jets at Colts (-10.5)
This game is on Thursday night, meaning it’s a short week for Indy, who is just coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Tennessee. So naturally, there will be a lot of attention paid to Carson Wentz and his mental mistakes at the end of that game. However, the Jets are also riding high on an emotional come-from-behind victory with their backup quarterback.
This is the perfect storm for the Colts not to focus and let the Jets ride the momentum from their win over the Bengals to cover.
