We’ve reached the point in the season where teams make their final playoff push and jockey for position in the NFL standings.

There are still a lot of teams competing for playoff spots, so the last few weeks of the season should be interesting for bettors. Let’s look at the NFL odds this week and break down the best picks against the spread.

Chargers (-9.5) at Texans

  • Date: Sunday, Dec. 26th
  • Time: 1:00 p.m. EST
  • Venue: NRG Stadium in Houston, TX

The Los Angeles Chargers lost a heartbreaker last Thursday when they blew two fourth-quarter leads, eventually losing in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs. The win would have catapulted them into first place in the AFC West.

This week, they have a chance to rebound against the Houston Texans.

The Chargers have been scoring an obscene number of points recently, averaging more than 35 in their last three games thanks to the outstanding play of quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Texans have not been particularly competitive this year and have the third-worst point differential (-165) in the NFL. They have been outscored by an average of almost 12 points per game, and this week should be no different against a potent Chargers offense.

While the Bolts’ defense is far from elite (22nd in yards per game), it should hold up against a Texans’ offense that ranks last in total yards, 31st in passing yards, and 31st in points scored (14.8). I believe the Chargers will easily cover in this game.

Steelers at Chiefs (-7.5)

  • Date: Sunday, Dec. 26th
  • Time: 4:25 p.m. EST
  • Venue: Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO

Sticking to the theme of betting on good teams to cover big spreads, I’ll take the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in a landslide.

The Steelers are 7-6-1, but they have struggled this year. They have the league’s 21st-ranked offense (317.5 YPG), 27th-ranked defense (367.5 YPG), and have a point differential of -44. This makes them the only team in the NFL with a negative point diff to somehow have a winning record.

They’ve won just two out of their last six games, and both of those have been squeakers. They escaped with a win against the Tennessee Titans last week thanks to a handful of timely turnovers but put up just 183 yards of total offense in the game. Their luck may run out this week when they head to Arrowhead to take on a peaking Chiefs team.

KC has now won seven straight and currently holds the bye in the AFC. After struggling to score earlier in the season, they’ve been lighting it up lately, averaging 32.8 points in their last five games. In the Steelers’ previous three losses, they’ve given up 36 points or more in each game, and I expect a similar result here.

One thing to watch is the COVID-19 situation. Both Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce have been placed on the reserve list. While they still have a chance to play on Sunday, their availability is definitely something to monitor before laying north of a touchdown with the Chiefs.

Ultimately, I believe that even if the Chiefs are missing these two players, they’ll still cover the spread because of their defense.
