With every week, football betting lines should get more consistent. Yet as teams fight for playoff spots, NFL spreads still have some value wagers.
For two weeks, it has seemed like there’s been a breaking news story every day about players getting cut or missing time due to COVID-19. These changes affect betting lines. This season has been difficult for bettors as they search for some semblance of consistency. So if you are looking for some intriguing NFL Week 10 spreads, here are some games to keep an eye on this week.
Cleveland at New England (-1)
As if Bill Belichick needed any extra breaks, he got dealt a huge one this week against the Cleveland Browns. Nick Chubb, Demetric Felton, and John Kelly have all tested positive for COVID-19. Only D’Ernest Johnson remains in the backfield for now, but that could change.
Johnson is capable of carrying the load, but he will have to stay healthy in New England. The Patriots have the same 5-4 record as the Browns, so both teams are vying for playoff spots.
New England’s offense ranks in the middle of the pack, but Mac Jones is getting more comfortable every week. The Pats are riding a three-game winning streak and are now only one game off the slumping Bills.
I felt that one point was already among the best NFL spreads this week. But with this news, I’m betting on the Patriots to win big at home.
Tampa Bay at Washington (+9.5)
There is a lingering thought that teams coming off a bye week don’t perform at their best. Yet, a rested Tom Brady is something to fear.
Last season, the Buccaneers beat Minnesota 26-14 after a week off. If that’s anything to go by, then Washington is in for a long day. The Buccaneers rank highly in almost every category on both sides of the ball. However, Bruce Arians spent most of the off week addressing his team’s biggest problem on the road, penalties, so expect a more disciplined effort from Tampa Bay.
Fewer penalties for the reigning champs means that a 9.5-point spread in Week 10 is not much to overcome. So I’ll give up the points and take Tampa Bay.
Carolina at Arizona (-10)
The Arizona Cardinals silenced a lot of doubters last week with their win in San Francisco. But, of course, good teams find ways to win without their best players on the field. And those who did play, like James Conner, stepped up to fill the void.
In contrast, the Carolina Panthers are thin at important positions. First, quarterback Sam Darnold will undergo an MRI on his shoulder this week. Then, the Panthers placed two starting offensive linemen on Injured Reserve.
NFL point spreads of 10 points are a big enough hill to climb for a healthy Panthers squad. However, with the Cardinals getting some key players back, I don’t see Carolina keeping this game close.
Buffalo at New York Jets (+13)
The history between these two teams tells much of the story for NFL Week 10 spreads. The Jets are one team that seems to give Buffalo trouble. And the Bills are having some trouble with a mid-season scoring slump.
Zach Wilson has been practicing, but coach Robert Saleh is not committing to starting him. Home fans loved Mike White two weeks ago, so look for another big game.
Buffalo is still a Super Bowl favorite, but turnovers have become a problem. The Bills need to take some heat off Josh Allen for the bulk of the offense.
Until the Bills become less reliant on Josh Allen, 13 points are too much to give up. So I’m taking the Jets to cover at home.
