If Mac Jones starts for San Francisco and the 49ers stay a market favorite, my 49ers vs Falcons prediction is the Falcons Spread (+3, -105).
From a prediction standpoint, I’d much prefer Atlanta at +3.5. Either way, a problem exists handicapping the 49ers: Who is playing?
It sounds like Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Ricky Pearsall could all return on Sunday. Just Purdy undoubtedly boosts San Francisco’s profile as Jones clearly looks less than 100%.
If Jones plays, it opens the door to some potential negative regression. San Francisco enters this contest with four wins against 2.6 expected, per ftnfantasy.com.
Driving that overperformance? Four wins by a combined 13 points. Of course, for a team that ran wildly unlucky in one-score games last year, it could just be positive regression.
I also have no clue what to make of San Francisco’s defensive matchup. Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are both out for the year, leaving Robert Saleh with an island of misfit toys on defense.
The potential good news for San Francisco is that Atlanta’s offense hasn’t looked great. The Falcons rank 20th in offensive DVOA at -4.6%.
To date, the 49ers have played opponents averaging an offensive DVOA rating of +7.2%, good for the fifth-hardest set in the league.
At present, the game is a pass for me. However, I’ll leave the door open to information later in the week to add a prediction.
