We’ve Likely Seen the End of Baker Mayfield Commercials

Let me say right away: I don’t begrudge players for going out and chasing commercial deals. Go get paid, man. If Progressive Insurance wanted to diversify its carefully curated lineup of celebrity spokespeople by hiring a few online sportsbook writers, I’d get out there and flex my high school theater acting chops, too.

Don’t lump me in with the weird, older-skewing cadre of talking heads that think Mayfield was “too focused on commercials.” There are a lot of factors that go into NFL betting lines and winning football games, and I’m just not sure this makes the cut.

That said… let’s have a moment of silence for Baker Mayfield’s acting career.

There’s a pretty good chance that it’s trending down.

Have We Seen the Last of Those Baker Mayfield Commercials?

Anyone still holding onto their cable bundle through the last few years has been treated to a lot of offseason Baker Mayfield.

The former Browns quarterback has been a lead spokesperson for Progressive Insurance in a series of commercials called At Home with Baker Mayfield. They heavily feature the Browns’ facility, staff, and even his wife, Emily.

I enjoy the commercials. I think they’re amusing and kind of exactly what I want from an ongoing athlete endorsement.

However, I’ve got to think that a series of commercials that’s centered around Mayfield and the Browns stadium is pretty much dead on arrival once Mayfield no longer plays in the Browns’ stadium.

If so, we’re probably going to see a steep decline in Baker Mayfield commercials this year.

I wouldn’t rule out other opportunities in the future, though. I  think Mayfield will likely beat out Sam Darnold for the starter role in Carolina eventually, though maybe not by Week 1.

A comeback story could be just what a commercial advertiser is looking for.
