  • Al Golden is set to start as the new Bengals defensive coordinator in 2025.
  • Golden previously spent two years in Cincinnati, as well as four years in Detroit.
  • Most of Golden’s coaching experience comes at the collegiate level.

Al Golden starts as the new Bengals defensive coordinator for the 2025 season.

Golden replaced Lou Anarumo, whom Cincinnati fired during the offseason. Before rejoining the NFL, Golden spent three years as Notre Dame’s DC.

Golden begins a second spell in Cincinnati this year. Previously, he worked as the Bengals’ linebackers coach from 2020-21.

That experience tailed a four-year tenure in Detroit. Golden worked two roles with the Lions:

  • Tight Ends Coach (2016-17)
  • Linebackers Coach (2018-19)

Golden picked up a wealth of NCAA experience before joining the Lions. Across 13 seasons, Golden worked for five different schools:

  • Virginia: Grad Asst. (1994-96), Defensive Coordinator (2001-05)
  • Boston College: LB’s Coach (1997-99)
  • Penn State: LB’s Coach (2000)
  • Temple: Head Coach (2006-10)
  • Miami (FL): Head Coach (2011-15)

As a head coach, Golden finished 59-59, producing better results in Miami. Over that span, Golden finished 32-25. In three bowl appearances, Golden went 0-3.

This year, he’ll hope to improve a Bengals defense that ranked 25th in points allowed last year.
