  • Jim Schwartz serves as the Browns’ defensive coordinator.
  • Cleveland ranked first in yards allowed per game during Schwartz’s first season.
  • Schwartz has previously worked as the DC for three other franchises.

Jim Schwartz enters his third season as the Browns’ defensive coordinator in 2025.

Schwartz led Cleveland’s defense to strong results in his debut. The Browns led the league in yards allowed per game in 2023, but the team fell to 19th in 2024.

At 59, Schwartz owns a plethora of NFL coaching experience. Including Cleveland, he has worked for six different teams.

This marks his second stop with the Browns. To begin his NFL career, Cleveland hired Schwartz as a personnel scout (1993-95).

Most of Schwartz’s experience after those three years came on defense:

  • Ravens: Defensive Asst. (1996-98)
  • Titans: Defensive Asst. (1999), LB’s Coach (2000), Defensive Coordinator (2001-08), Senior Defensive Asst. (2021-22)
  • Lions: Head Coach (2009-13)
  • Bills: Defensive Coordinator (2014)
  • Eagles: Defensive Coordinator (2016-20)

As the Lions’ head coach, Schwartz finished 29-51 with one winning season. In his lone playoff appearance, the Lions lost.

Schwartz also earned more coaching experience at the college level. Before joining Cleveland, he worked four seasons in college:

  • Maryland: Grad Asst./LB’s Coach (1989)
  • Minnesota: Grad Asst. (1990)
  • North Carolina Central: Secondary Coach (1991)
  • Colgate: LB’s Coach (1992)
