Browns vs Steelers Odds: Spread, Moneyline & Total
Steelers vs Browns Prediction
Based on the Steelers’ offensive metrics against the Bengals and the Browns’ potential red zone regression, my Browns vs Steelers prediction is the Steelers Over 20.5 Points (+105).
I’m going to treat this game as a learning experience. My gut tells me the total may be too low, but limited data exists to render it an actionable opinion.
Pittsburgh delivered – unquestionably – its best offensive performance of the season in Week 3. Playing a questionable Bengals defense may have contributed to the output.
Here’s the Steelers’ EPA per play and success rate data over the first three games:
- Weeks 1-2: -0.161 EPA per play (32nd), 37.1% offensive success rate (30th)
- Week 3: +0.248 EPA per play (7th), 50% offensive success rate (12th)
Aaron Rodgers, perhaps buoyed by offensive line changes, recorded a +0.309 dropback EPA and 52.6% dropback success rate.
Two factors concern me in believing the Steelers can replicate that performance.
First is the short turnaround before Thursday’s road game in Cleveland.
Second is that the Steelers managed only three red zone chances against the Bengals, one of which came off a muffed punt.
That said, I question the true quality of the Browns defense. Bryce Young moved the ball on this defense with the Panthers recording 4.9 yards per play.
In Week 3, Cleveland survived as home dogs by evading red zone conversions.
Carolina’s three red zone trips resulted in only 10 points. A Panthers first-and-goal from the four-yard line resulted in a field goal before a later touchdown.
Purely by EPA per play and success rate, the Browns defense remains outstanding. Last week, the Browns ranked fourth in EPA allowed and sixth in success rate on plays excluding turnovers.
Whether the Steelers offense qualifies as the stiffest test for Cleveland remains unknown. By Week 3 alone, the answer is clearly yes.
However, I don’t want to get caught overreacting to a one-game sample size. Based on current odds, it’s a look at the Steelers team total or a pass on Thursday night.
