Chip Kelly’s 2025 experiment with the Raiders did not work.

Fresh off winning a national championship as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, Kelly returned to the NFL to call plays for the Raiders. But nothing went right in Las Vegas, and Kelly was sacked. The Raiders’ odds market tanked, and they ended up in position for the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Kelly wasn’t good with the Raiders, but neither was anyone else. Perhaps that’s why Northwestern was willing to take a chance on bringing the 62-year-old back to the Big Ten as an offensive coordinator.

Chip Kelly, Other Teams Coached

Before arriving at Oregon in 2007, Chip Kelly spent more than a decade developing his offense at his alma mater, New Hampshire – an FCS powerhouse in the old days of the CAA. He was in the northeast from 1994 to 2006, working as a running backs coach (1994-96), offensive line coach (1997-98), and offensive coordinator (1999-2006).

Ironically, Kelly worked on the defensive side of the ball in his opening years as a coach. His first gig was as a defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Columbia in 1990. He coached outside linebackers and safeties in 1991 before returning to Durham as the running backs coach in 1992.

He spent one year as the defensive coordinator at Johns Hopkins before returning to UNH for his formative years on offense.

Since his famous run at Oregon, he’s worked as the head coach of two NFL teams and one college program. He’s worked exclusively as an OC since 2024.
