Joe Whitt Jr. enters his second season as the Commanders’ defensive coordinator.
Whitt acquired most of his recent experience under Dan Quinn. Whitt left Washington alongside Quinn prior to the 2024 season, when the Commanders reached the NFC Championship.
He began his NFL tenure back in 2007. After a year in Atlanta working with defensive backs, Whitt moved to Green Bay for the longest spell of his career.
He spent the 2008 season working in defensive quality control. From 2009-17, Whitt worked as the Packers’ cornerbacks coach.
Whitt concluded his Packers stint as the team’s defensive pass game coordinator.
A year in Cleveland followed for Whitt. Under Freddie Kitchens, he worked as DB’s coach and defensive pass game coordinator.
Whitt operated in the same role during the 2020 season on Quinn’s Falcons staff. A year later, he began his tenure in Dallas.
Before joining the NFL, Whitt worked seven years in college football:
- Auburn: Student Assistant (2000-01)
- The Citadel: WR’s Coach (2002)
- Louisville: CB’s Coach (2003-06)
This season, Whitt aims to overhaul a weak Commanders defense from 2024.
Washington ranked 18th in points allowed last year. However, the team also allowed 26 or more points nine times (playoffs included).
