Matt Eberflus takes over as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator in 2025.

Eberflus joins Brian Schottenheimer’s staff after a spell as Bears head coach. Over 46 games as Chicago’s head coach, Eberflus finished 14-32 with no playoff appearances.

His role in Dallas marks Eberflus’s second stint as a defensive coordinator. From 2018-21, he worked as the Colts’ defensive coordinator.

In four seasons, the Colts ranked 10th or better in points allowed per game three times.

This season also qualifies as Eberflus’s second with the Cowboys. From 2011-17, he worked as Dallas’ linebackers coach.

He held the same role with the Browns from 2009-10. Eberflus’s stop in Cleveland marked his first in the NFL after a long spell in college football.

Over 17 seasons, Eberflus worked for two schools in a few roles:

  • Toledo: Student Assistant (1992), Grad Assistant (1993), Outside LB’s Coach (1994-98), Defensive Backs Coach (1999-2000)
  • Missouri: Defensive Coordinator (2001-08)

This year, Eberflus aims to revive a strong Cowboys defense from prior years. Last year, Dallas ranked 31st in points allowed per game.

In the three prior years, the Cowboys finished no worse than seventh in that statistic.
