Vic Fangio enters his second season as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator.
Fangio led the league’s best defense last year. In terms of points per game allowed, no team outpaced the Eagles.
In Fangio, the Eagles possess a defensive coordinator with loads of NFL experience. He joined the NFL coaching ranks in 1986 and has worked in the league all but one year since.
Fangio began as the linebackers coach for the Saints. He worked in New Orleans from 1986-94. He held the same title with the Ravens from 2006-09.
In between, Fangio worked for three teams as defensive coordinator:
- Carolina Panthers (1995-98)
- Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001)
- Houston Texans (2002-05)
Fangio spent a year in college football after leaving the Ravens. In 2010, he worked as Stanford’s defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh.
He returned to the NFL in 2011 alongside Harbaugh. From 2011-14, he worked as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.
That tenure included a trip to the Super Bowl.
Fangio’s sixth stop as a DC came from 2015-18 in Chicago. In his final two seasons, he led the Bears to a pair of top-10 ranks in points allowed.
After Chicago, Fangio earned his first head coach position. From 2019-21, he worked as Broncos’ head coach. Those campaigns resulted in a 19-30 record with no playoff berths.
In 2022, Fangio spent a year as an Eagles consultant. A year later, he left to coordinate the Dolphins’ defense before returning to Philadelphia.
In his first season as Eagles DC, Fangio led the team to first in points allowed and a Super Bowl win.
