Based on the Commanders’ inability to stop the run and the Eagles’ prior offensive success, my Eagles vs Commanders prediction is the Eagles Over 25.5 Points.
Until proven otherwise, I’m forced to assume the Commanders’ porous rush defense will continue into this season. Since hiring Dan Quinn, the unit has continuously failed to impress.
In 2024, the defense ranked 26th in rush defense DVOA, per FTN Fantasy. Last season, the defense regressed to 27th in rush defense DVOA, albeit against good rushing attacks.
But positive regression from that ranking is unlikely to arrive against the Eagles.
Philly has cleared this benchmark in three of the last four regular season meetings. Additionally, the offense exploded for 55 points in the NFC Championship game two years ago.
Their only regular season failure came last year in Week 18. Tanner McKee started at quarterback while Saquon Barkley rested for the playoffs.
Still, an argument can be made that the Eagles should have performed better than their 17-point outing suggests.
Philadelphia faced a third-and-two from the Washington six and turned it over on downs. McKee later threw an interception at the Washington 20-yard line.
Two weeks earlier, the Eagles scored 29 points against the defense. Barkley rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries while Tank Bigsby added 37 yards on four attempts.
Washington’s defense experienced a number of injuries, but I remain skeptical of their ability to defend the run.
Since joining the Eagles, Barkley rushed for 120 yards in every game against Washington. The Eagles averaged 29.3 points per game over that three-game sample size.
Irrespective of opponent, Washington allowed 10 teams to clear this benchmark last season. Under Quinn, the defense surrendered 26 or more in 19 of their 37 games.
While offseason additions should help Washington, I remain confident in the Eagles’ offensive line and Barkley to lead the Eagles over this benchmark.
