In the 60-year history of the Super Bowl, an NFL place kicker has never won Super Bowl MVP. Neither has a punter.Â
Since Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000, 17 of the 26 Super Bowl MVPs have been quarterbacks, and 22 have been offensive players.Â
Currently, Desmond Howard is the only special teams player to have won Super Bowl MVP. He had 244 return yards with the Packers in Super Bowl XXXI.Â
A place kicker winning Super Bowl MVP is realistic, at least theoretically. The formula would be a low-scoring game, dominated by aggressive defenses and sputtering offenses, where a high percentage of the winning team’s offense came from field goal kicks.
It probably wouldn’t hurt if the potential MVP kicker set a new Super Bowl record for most field goals in a game.
