How Many Times Has a Number 1 Seed Won the Super Bowl?

Since NFL seeding began, No. 1 seeds have had the most success winning the Super Bowl. 

How Many No. 1 Seeds Have Won the Super Bowl? 

Since seeding began in 1975, one seeds have won the Super Bowl 26 times. That includes 14 successes with both No. 1 Seeds in the Super Bowl. 

Most recently, the 2022-23 Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl as the AFC’s top seed. In Super Bowl LVII, Kansas City defeated the Eagles, who entered as the NFC’s top seed. 

Kansas City’s success qualifies as the lone achievement by a No. 1 seed since the playoffs expanded to 14 teams. 

Dating back to 2020, two one seeds reached the Super Bowl against a lower-seeded team. Both teams – 2020-21 Chiefs and 2023-24 49ers – lost outright. 

This year, the Seattle Seahawks will try to become the 27th one-seed to win the Super Bowl. 

For the New England Patriots, they’re trying to become the second straight No. 2 seed to win the Super Bowl.

As previously noted, No. 1 seeds have enjoyed the best success winning the Super Bowl. Entering Super Bowl 60, those seeds have contributed 26 wins. 

No. 2 seeds rank second in terms of Super Bowl victories. 

Those seeds account for 11 wins since 1975, including last year. Somewhat surprisingly, four seeds have outperformed three seeds by a 4-2 margin. 

Five and six seeds have won the Super Bowl two times each, while a No. 7 seed has yet to win the Super Bowl since the playoffs expanded.
