At age 31, Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt finds himself in need of a new contract.
Hunt rejoined the Chiefs prior to the 2024 NFL season. He proved himself as a strong red-zone presence with Kansas City, recording 15 touchdowns over two seasons.
Hunt scored at least seven touchdowns in three straight seasons. That success came despite only one season in which he cleared 700 rushing yards.
Kareem Hunt Contract: Predicting Hunt’s Free Agency Deal
At this point in his career, Hunt likely rates out as an RB2 to handle red zone touches.
Given Hunt’s wait so far in free agency, the chances are most teams are unwilling to offer a multi-season commitment.
Further bolstering that argument is that only one back aged 30 or higher has received a contract. That designation belongs to James Conner, who re-signed with Arizona.
Plus, not since the 2021 NFL season has Hunt posted a yards per attempt output higher than four. In his last two seasons with the Chiefs, he averaged 3.65 yards per rush.
Expect a one-year deal for Hunt around $2 million AAV. That annual value places him slightly above his last deal, yet in line with Nick Chubb’s previous AAV with the Texans.
Kareem Hunt Next Team Predictions
The first potential fit for Hunt is an AFC West rival to Kansas City: the Las Vegas Raiders.
Las Vegas features Ashton Jeanty at running back. However, the Raiders lack depth pieces beyond the 2025 first-round pick.
Currently, Dylan Laube and Chris Collier are Vegas’ backup backs. Hunt could offer a reliable backup option at a low cost for a team with spending power.
Another potential destination for Hunt is the Atlanta Falcons.
Atlanta lost Tyler Allgeier to the Cardinals this offseason. That leaves the team with a gap at RB2 behind Bijan Robinson.
Hunt, who spent time with Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland, could replace Allgeier’s production in the red zone. At a low cost, he offers an instant upgrade over the current RB2 and RB3 in Atlanta.
