More often than not, the NFL will tell you what to think of a quarterback.

When a quarterback is good, teams will pay them hundreds of millions of dollars to maintain control of that quarterback.

When quarterbacks are average, they’ll still get paid. But eventually, they’re likely to get traded or dropped to make room for younger, cheaper quarterbacks.

The result is one group of effective quarterbacks who have only played for one or two teams, ruling over a larger group of journeymen who bounce around the league.

For quarterbacks in the latter group, it’s incredibly rare to make a deep playoff run. By the time a quarterback reaches his fifth team, there is usually a league-wide consensus that the player in question must not be very good.

That’s what makes the story of Sam Darnold so unusual. By making the Super Bowl with Seattle at the end of the 2025 season, Darnold has joined a truly rare group of players who played for a title after an up-and-down career.
