  • Matt Burke enters his third season as Texans defensive coordinator.
  • Burke previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins.
  • Houston ranked 11th and 14th in points allowed in two years under Burke.

Matt Burke begins his third year as the Texans’ defensive coordinator.

Burke, at 49 years old, owns a wealth of NFL coaching experience. He joined the coaching ranks in 2004 and has coached eight teams, including Houston.

Burke began with five years in Tennessee. After two years as an administrative assistant, he moved into defensive quality control.

After leaving Tennessee, Burke spent eight years as a linebackers coach for three teams:

  • Detroit Lions (2009-13)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (2014-15)
  • Miami Dolphins (2016)

Miami promoted Burke to defensive coordinator for two seasons. The Dolphins’ defense struggled those seasons, ranking 29th and 27th in points allowed per game.

Upon leaving Miami, Burke worked for the Eagles, Jets and Cardinals.

In Philadelphia, he worked as a defensive assistant for his first year. Then, he coached the defensive line and coordinated the run game.

A year in game management followed with New York before he coached the Cardinals’ defensive line.

The move to Houston followed for Burke, who also spent four years in college football.
