The Steelers have hemorrhaged money during the 2025 offseason, handing new contracts to Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, DK Metcalf, and others.
It’s hard to hand out money like that without taking care of the star player who’s been the top contributor on the team for most of the last decade. So perhaps it wasn’t surprising when the Steelers’ front office finally ponied up more than $120 million for 30-year-old T.J. Watt.
Watt, who turns 31 in October, was in line to be a free agent next spring. And while the Steelers’ odds market isn’t exactly booming with potential after the past few months of roster retooling, it’d be difficult for Pittsburgh to let its most popular, franchise-defining player just walk away.
T.J. Watt Contract
T.J. Watt signed a three-year extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $123 million.
Watt’s new contract will keep him in Pittsburgh through 2028.
T.J. Watt Signing Bonus
T.J. Watt earned a signing bonus of $40 million after signing his new extension.
T.J. Watt Salary
T.J. Watt will make $44 million from his NFL contract in 2025, but most of that is his signing bonus. Only $4 million is structured as base salary.
That salary number will jump to $32 million in 2026 and 2027.
Over the life of his contract extension, Watt will collect an average annual salary of $41 million.
T.J. Watt Guaranteed Money
T.J. Watt’s 2025 contract extension includes $108 million in guaranteed money at the time it was signed.
That means everything is guaranteed up front except his $15 million roster bonus due for 2028.
