What Is an NFL EDGE and Where Did the Term Come From?

In the NFL, an EDGE is the updated modern term for a pass rusher โ€“ a player whose primary responsibility is to collapse the opposing teamโ€™s offense by pressuring or sacking the quarterback.

EDGE is a different descriptor for most NFL draftees because itโ€™s a role, not an explicit position.

In the past, edge players were often called other things, such as defensive ends or outside linebackers. The edge terminology includes both of those positions and potentially others.

The positional confusion stems from the fact that different football teams play from different base schemes.ย

In a 4-3 base scheme with four players lining up at the line of scrimmage, itโ€™s the job of the two defensive ends to rush the passer and collapse the pocket. But in a 3-4 base scheme, that job falls more to the outside linebackers, while up-front linemen are tasked with engaging the blockers.ย

A quality edge player would be able to play either defensive end in a 4-3 or OLB in a 3-4. In more unusual situations, they may even move inside in an exotic pressure package.ย
