As we head into the stretch run of the NHL season, now’s a good time to see what teams are at the bottom of the pecking order in the NHL.

We talk a lot about Stanley Cup contenders or Presidents’ Trophy contenders. Comparatively, much less time is spent covering the worst teams in the league, who could find themselves at the bottom of the standings.

Here are the odds as of March 5 for which team will finish the year with the fewest regular-season points.

NHL Odds: Fewest Regular-Season Points

Who’s Favored to Have the Fewest Points?

Vancouver Canucks (-1600)

Any team’s fortunes would change drastically after trading away its franchise cornerstone. It’s no different for Vancouver right now.

Following their December 13 trade of defenseman Quinn Hughes, the odds for the Canucks to win the unceremonious title of ‘fewest regular season points’ skyrocketed. A team that struggled to stay over .500 last season and eventually missed the playoffs, losing its most significant piece, is going to slide towards the lottery.

While Vancouver was definitely able to get a haul of young talent after the trade of Hughes, it probably hurts to see the Wild’s fortunes change so quickly. Not to mention the double-sting of Canucks fans watching him get traded and then lead Team USA to a gold medal victory at the Olympics.

As of a 6-4 loss against the Hurricanes on Wednesday, they have an 18-36-7 record and a league-worst 43 team points.

Vancouver also moved on from forward Kiefer Sherwood in a trade with the Sharks that landed them a second-round pick and 26-year-old defenseman Cole Clayton.

More players could be moved between now and Friday’s deadline. Reports have indicated that Brock Boeser could be willing to waive his no-movement clause. Elias Pettersson is also a buzzy player in trade speculation pieces, but there’s been limited intel on actual deals.

The odds that another team on this list moves below the Canucks are quite low. The Blues and Blackhawks have a good shot, but they’re trying to win. I don’t think the same can be said for Vancouver.
