This has been a big year for international hockey with the incredible success of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics and the 2026 IIHF World Championship.Â
Obviously, the Winter Olympics are well known, but each year the International Ice Hockey Federation puts on a World Championship with a field of 16 countries. Earlier this spring, Finland won the gold medal for the fifth time in the history of the tournament.Â
Later on next year, the 2027 IIHF World Championships will be held in Germany in two cities, Düsseldorf and Mannheim. The tournament will be a big test of the big hockey countries and their national teams, with the usual players — Canada, Finland, Sweden, and Team USA — all hoping for a successful outing.Â

Who’s Favored to Win the 2026 IIHF World Championship?

Canada has been favored at the past two major international tournaments and is once again as we head towards the 2027 World Championships.Â
Despite being favored, the Canadians haven’t been able to capture gold.Â
At this spring’s 2026 IIHF World Championships, Canada bowed out in the semifinals, losing to the eventual gold-medal winner, the Fins. Later on in the third-place game of the tournament, Canada fell to Norway in overtime.
Canada had the tournament’s most star-studded roster by far, featuring centers Macklin Celebrini and Sidney Crosby, but failed to even medal.Â
That came off the heels of a disappointing overtime loss to Team USA in the gold medal game of the Winter Olympics.
Those performances mean that Team Canada needs a gold medal at the 2027 Worlds to prevent further sliding.Â
It’s unclear who will be on the roster, given that rosters are typically composed of players who did not qualify for the NHL playoffs which takes place at the same time as the tournament. But Canada certainly has a deep enough bench of talent throughout the league that they should be able to assemble one of the best rosters in the tournament.Â
