How Many Passing Yards Will Derek Carr Have in Week 5?

When looking into NFL games for Week 5, there are several bets on tap that are intriguing.

If you’re looking for NFL betting odds this weekend, the Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears matchup is one to watch.

More specifically, I suggest you tune in to see what quarterback Derek Carr can do. They most recently lost pretty handily to the Los Angeles Rams, though Carr fought back admirably and kept it exciting.

Here’s what you should know about Derek Carr when you’re thinking of making bets for Week 5 in the NFL.

Can the Bears Slow Down Derek Carr?

The Bears are 12th in passing yards allowed per game, which could present a problem for the Raiders in Week 5. Las Vegas has thrown the ball 170 times and attempted 99 rushes. However, the Chargers showed that it’s possible to slow down the Las Vegas offense if you get physical with the Raiders’ receivers and throw them off their routes.

The good news for the Raiders is that the Bears are middle-of-the-pack in sacks, ranking 17th. Throwing receivers off their routes only works if you can pressure the quarterback. Otherwise, pressing receivers at the line can be detrimental, as corners in press coverage can only cover wide receivers for a few seconds before they get open.

If the Bears gamble and try to press the Raiders’ receivers, they have to pressure Derek Carr. If not, the Raiders will use Darren Waller to expose the middle of the defense and send Ruggs III on deep routes. Without pressure on the quarterback, the Bears will have to choose between loosening up their press coverage or having a linebacker cover Waller, limiting their pass rush.

I expect Derek Carr to have a good game against the Bears, despite Chicago’s previous success against the pass.

Carr Has Plenty of Weapons Around Him

The Raiders quarterback hasn’t had trouble moving the football at all this season. He’s currently put up 1,399 yards and eight touchdowns.

Last week’s loss is the only game Carr didn’t put up at least 300 yards.

In fact, in the weeks before that, Carr threw for 435, 382, and 386 yards, respectively.

Carr has weapons in wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, Henry Ruggs III, and tight end Darren Waller. Look for lots of checkdown reads from Carr early as the Raiders see what the Bears will do. If they press, look for Waller to expose the middle of the field. If they don’t press, look for a lot of quick routes that put Renfrow and Ruggs in space so that they can make plays after the catch. They’re coming off a tough loss and should be motivated to bounce back this week against the Bears.

What are the Odds for the Game Itself?

It’s essential that you also look at the total game to add context to what Carr should be able to do this weekend.

The Las Vegas Raiders are -225 favorites, along with a 5.5 point spread. If we’re going to talk about money line or points spread bets, I like the Raiders.

The Chicago Bears are young at quarterback and still trying to find an identity. In addition, David Montgomery is injured, meaning the Bears will have a challenging time running the ball to help Justin Fields.

I also like them to cover the spread, especially if Carr can put up passing yards similar to his first three games.
