British Open 2022: Betting Odds Plus Ranking the 156-Player Field

It’s time for the 150th edition of the British Open.

The historic St. Andrews course is hosting the tournament for a record 30th time. It is a classic links-style course where the wind will likely play a factor, which most PGA Tour players aren’t accustomed to. This is what makes golf betting for this tournament so interesting.

Winners of this event have ranged from the best players in the world to somewhat unknowns such as Ben Curtis in 2003.

This shows that truly anything can happen at the Open Championship.

1. Rory McIlroy Odds to Win British Open: +1000

It’s hard to bet against McIlroy since his game is in prime form. In his last seven events, his worst finish is a T-19, and he has five top-10 finishes. This could very well be the week he wins his first major title since 2014.

2. Jon Rahm Odds to Win British Open: +1800

Rahm is a solid wind player, which will serve him well at St. Andrews. He’s had some success at the British Open of late, finishing T-3 and T-11 in his last two appearances, respectively.

3. Scottie Scheffler Odds to Win British Open: +2000

While this will only be Scheffler’s second appearance at the British Open (T-8 last year), he has the all-around game to contend. He’s cooled off from his torrid stretch this spring, but the 26-year-old has two runner-up finishes since he missed the PGA Championship cut. He may be due for another win, which would be his fifth of the season.

4. Justin Thomas Odds to Win British Open: +2000

Playing well at links courses requires a lot of shot-making, and there may be no better shotmaker on the PGA Tour right now than Thomas. He hasn’t had the greatest success at this tournament; his best career finish is a T-11 in 2019.

5. Xander Schauffele Odds to Win British Open: +1400

Schauffele enters the week in peak form with wins in the Travelers Championship, the Genesis Scottish Open, and the J.P. McManus Pro-Am the last few weeks. He’s made the cut in all five of his Open Championship appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2018.

6. Jordan Spieth Odds to Win British Open: +1800

Even when things aren’t going great for the three-time major champion, he always finds success across the pond. Spieth is a perfect 8-for-8 in cuts made at the British Open, including four top-5 finishes. He finished second to Collin Morikawa a year ago, so no matter what form he’s in, don’t ever count Spieth out at the British Open.

7. Matt Fitzpatrick Odds to Win British Open: +2000

Fresh off his U.S. Open win, Fitzpatrick is playing the best golf of his life. His added length will serve him well at St. Andrews, which rewards the longer hitters. With all that said, he’s never finished inside the top 20 at this event.

8. Cameron Smith Odds to Win British Open: +2500

Smith is one of the best players in the world who hasn’t won a major, although he won the Players Championship earlier this season. His top-notch ball-striking should serve him well, especially in windy conditions. But it’s worth noting his best finish at the British Open is a T-20 back in 2019.

9. Collin Morikawa Odds to Win British Open: +3300

The defending champion has to be in the top 10, right? The No. 4-ranked player in the world finished T-5 at the U.S. Open, which snapped a bit of a slump. After the Masters, he went five straight events without a top-25 finish.

10. Shane Lowry Odds to Win British Open: +2200

Lowry will be a fan favorite and a popular pick this week. He won the Claret Jug in 2019 and finished T-12 a year ago. He missed the cut in 2015, the last time the tournament was held at St. Andrews.

11. Tommy Fleetwood Odds to Win British Open: +3300

Fleetwood enters in solid form, coming off a T-4 finish at the Scottish Open last week. He finished second at the 2019 Open Championship.

12. Tyrrell Hatton Odds to Win British Open: +4000

It’s been an up-and-down year for Hatton who only has two top-10 finishes this year, but is coming off a T-24 at the Scottish Open last week. In 2019, he finished T-6, so he has had success at this event before.

13. Patrick Cantlay Odds to Win British Open: +2500

Cantlay hasn’t had tremendous success in majors relative to how good he is as a player, but there are some indications this week could be different. He finished in the top 5 at the Scottish Open last week, and T-14 at last month’s U.S. Open. 

14. Will Zalatoris Odds to win British Open: +2800

Zalatoris has finished second in every major except the British Open, which he’s never completed. He withdrew with an injury last year, his lone appearance.

15. Louis Oosthuizen Odds to win British Open: +4000

While it hasn’t been the best year for the 39-year-old, he has a Claret Jug and is coming off a T-2 at this tournament a year ago. This is an event he’ll always have a chance in.

16. Dustin Johnson Odds to Win British Open: +3300

Johnson’s length could serve him well this week at St. Andrews; the course is expected to play firm and fast. The two-time major champion has four top-10 finishes at the Open Championship, including T-8 last year.

17. Brooks Koepka Odds to Win British Open: +4000

Given Koepka’s success in majors, he always has a chance to win.. His best finish at this event is a T-4 back in 2019.

18. Hideki Matsuyama Odds to Win British Open: +4000

Besides a T-6 finish in his first appearance back in 2013, the 33-year-old’s best finish is T-18. With that being said, his solid ball-striking is something that should serve him well and give him a chance.

19. Joaquín Niemann Odds to Win British Open: +5000

Niemann is an interesting case; he won at one of the best fields of the year – the Genesis Invitational – but hasn’t had great success in majors. His best career finish is a T-23 at the PGA Championship this year and the U.S. Open in 2022.

20. Sam Burns Odds to Win British Open: +4000

Burns certainly has the game to win a major championship one day, but it doesn’t feel like it will be this week. He finished T-66 at the Scottish Open last week and T-76 in his first Open Championship a year ago.

21. Max Homa Odds to Win British Open: +5000

The 31-year-old is still getting used to links golf, but his creativity should help him a great deal. He’s one of a few players to have made the cut in all three majors this year.

22. Viktor Hovland Odds to Win British Open: +5000

His short game is what holds him back, but with how St. Andrews is set up it might not play as big of a role this week. He finished T-12 last year in his first appearance at the tournament.

23. Justin Rose Odds to Win British Open: +6600

Rose obviously has the experience needed to win at the British Open and is coming in relatively good form. He’s made the cut in seven straight Open Championships.

24. Tony Finau Odds to Win British Open: +4000

Finau could be a sneaky player to watch this week. His length will certainly help him, and he has never missed a cut at the British Open, including three top-15 finishes.

25. Ryan Fox Odds to Win British Open: +6600

Fox is one of the best players on the DP World Tour, so this is a terrific price. He’s currently ranked fourth on Tour and has seven top-10 finishes in 13 tournaments. Fox finished T-16 at the 2015 edition of the Open Championship.

Despite finishing T49 at the 2015 Open Championship, Ryan Fox had the second lowest combined score for Friday and Sunday (Russell Henley beat him by one). Seems kind of irrelevant but if you were trying to talk yourself into him, there's definitely some positives to take from it.

26. Sungjae Im Odds to Win British Open: +6600

Im missed the cut in his only Open Championship appearance (2019). But, his above-average ball-striking should help him a great deal if the wind were to pick up.

27. Seamus Power Odds to Win British Open: +8000

The Irishman has played very well in majors this year – T-27, T-9, and T-12. Links-style may suit his game best, so look for him to have another solid week.

28. Bryson DeChambeau Odds to Win British Open: +6600

It’s hard to know how healthy DeChambeau is, but if he’s close to 100% he has the game to play well at St. Andrews, a course that rewards length.

29. Marc Leishman Odds to Win British Open: +8000

Leishman isn’t playing his best golf this season, but if the weather gets poor and the wind kicks up, there aren’t many better bad-weather players in the field. He also has shown he can contend in majors before.

30. Tiger Woods Odds to Win British Open: +6600

Given his success at St. Andrews (wins in 2000 and 2005), no one has better vibes at this course than Woods. While he’s not even close to 100% from a health standpoint, he can give it everything he has with this being the last major of the season.
