The Players Championship is commonly referred to as “golf’s fifth major.”

However, the tournament is not one of the four official major championships. Those designations belong to the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship.

At the same time, the Players’ prize money payout structure rivals some of the major championships.

Whichever player wins at TPC Sawgrass takes home $4.5 million in prize money. Every player who finishes inside the top-five wins at least $1 million.

The total prize money available to players this week is $25 million. Compared with the four majors, the prize money pools are $20 million.

In terms of a winner’s share, Rory McIlroy took home $4.2 million by winning the 2025 Masters Tournament. J.J. Spaun, winner of the 2025 U.S. Open, earned $4.3 million with his win.
