The 2026 British Open returns to Royal Birkdale Golf Club for the third time this century.
Not since the 2017 Open has Birkdale hosted golf’s final major championship. Nine years ago, Jordan Spieth won by three shots over Matt Kuchar and six over Haotong Li.
Other notable finishers that year include Rory McIlroy (T-4th) and Brooks Koepka (T-6th). Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele also recorded top-20 finishes.
The prior Open at Birkdale was held in 2008 and won by Padraig Harrington. Whereas Spieth won at -12, Harrington won at +3, four shots better than Ian Poulter.
Adam Scott, still active on the PGA Tour today, finished T-16th in 2008 and T-22nd in 2017.
