I never dreamed that I would climb over the moon in ecstasy
But nevertheless it’s there that I’m shortly about to be
‘Cause I’ve got a golden ticket, I’ve got a golden ticket

With all due respect to Willy Wonka, scoring admission into the chocolate factory is nice and all, but claiming the final invitation into the annual Masters Tournament field is the real golden ticket – one last golden chance for a player to make his way.

There are currently 93 players on the entry list for next week’s festivities at Augusta National Golf Club, a number which can only increase by one, as all qualification checkpoints have been passed, leaving just a single spot open.

Maybe.

If the winner of this week’s Valero Texas Open isn’t already in the Masters, he’ll be given a trophy on the 18th green, conduct a winner’s press conference and then be whisked away to the Georgia pines – a professional golfer’s version of hitting the lottery on the last scratch-off ticket in the store.

What’s the probability that we add one more to that field? Well, it depends on how we look at it.

Here’s the simplest way: There have been six editions of the VTO contested since it moved into the pre-Masters spot on the schedule in 2019. Three (Corey Conners in 2019, J.J. Spaun in 2022 and Akshay Bhatia in 2024) have been won by a player who wasn’t previously in the Masters; three others (Jordan Spieth in 2021, Conners in 2023 and Brian Harman in 2025) were already heading for Augusta.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, it’s amazing,” Conners said in ’19, after Monday qualifying earlier in the week. “Super excited. This is a dream come true and really happy with how I did today and glad we got it done.”

But of course, that’s not how probability works.

Here’s a much less simple way: I took the odds of the 23 players who are currently playing in both San Antonio and Augusta, transferred this week’s numbers into implied probability, then calculated them together.

The result – from tri-favorites Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg and Russell Henley (+1600) each with a 5.88 percent chance down to Michael Kim and Sami Valimaki (+15000) at .66 – shows that there’s a 75.2 percent chance one of the players already qualified will win this week, meaning there’s just slightly less than a 1-in-4 opportunity for one of the other 107 players to claim that golden ticket.

Again, though, that’s hardly foolproof, either – it’s just based on the odds which have been placed beside each name by the bookmakers this week.

Using that formula, those with the best chance of clinching that last potential invitation are Michael Thorbjornsen (+2800), who was in contention through three rounds at last week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and had a chance to get his spot in the Masters field if he’d finished inside the top-10 and climbed inside the top-50 in the world; Rickie Fowler (+2800), who’s shown a high floor this year, but is on the verge of missing his fourth Masters in the past five years; Keith Mitchell (+3500), who is still seeking his long-awaited second career victory; and Ryo Hisatsune (+4000), whose name has been peppering leaderboards in the early part of this season.

In any case, every single player in this week’s field will be keeping one eye on next week.

For those already in the Masters, the Valero Texas Open serves as one last chance to fine-tune all facets of the game before arriving in Augusta.

And for those who aren’t in next week, it represents golf’s ultimate golden ticket – one final opportunity to get invited to the proverbial chocolate factory.
