The 2026 Sony Open in Hawaii will be the 28th year of the event, but it’s quite possible it will be the last.
There are a few factors at play.
No. 1, Sony’s sponsorship of the event expires this year, and there have been no known talks of renewals. With rising costs of sponsoring PGA Tour events, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for companies to invest.
And No. 2, and most important, the PGA Tour likely will undergo major scheduling changes beginning with the 2027 season.
New CEO Brian Rolapp and the Tour have hinted at several changes, including starting the season after the Super Bowl and shortening it.
The Sentry, the other event in Hawaii, was cancelled in 2026 after water issues at the Plantation Course in the fall. And although Sentry’s contract with the PGA Tour runs through 2036, there are no guarantees their sponsorship is for an event in Hawaii.
It also wouldn’t make much sense for the Tour to go to Hawaii for only one event.
