Philadelphia at Detroit: Week 8 Scoring Prediction Against the Lions

Two disappointing teams usually don’t make for a lively matchup, but the betting opportunities of Philadelphia at Detroit make it exciting.

This Sunday, the Eagles hope to keep the Lions winless in a contest where the NFL betting odds have Philly as short 3 point favorites.

You’d think the Eagles would be bigger favorites, having racked up two wins this year while the Lions have zero, but yet they’re only projected to win by a field goal. So can the Eagles beat the odds and put up points in bunches against a struggling Lions defense?

Below, I give my thoughts on the scoring potential of the Jalen Hurts-led offense at Ford Field in Week 8.

Eagles Soar Against Below-Average Defense

Sure, Philadelphia doesn’t pose a threat to most defenses, but they do know how to feast on the bottom-tier competition.

For example, when they played the lousy defenses of the Falcons and the Chiefs, they were able to score 30 and 32, respectively. They’re ranked middle of the pack in terms of points per game, averaging 22.7.

The Eagles’ primary way of scoring these points is through the air. The Eagles rank in the league’s top half in pass play percentage at 61.05%, allowing Jalen Hurts to compile 1,716 passing yards this year.

The Reason Detroit Is 0-7

You can blame Jared Goff, Dan Campbell, or somebody else in the organization, but the stats tell us that Detroit’s passing defense is responsible for their 0-7 record.

Not only do the Lions rank 21st in pass yards allowed per game, but they are also dead last in opponent yards per pass (8.9). This secondary just isn’t built to contain the pass, especially with all of the players they’ve lost to injuries.

Those losses include a pair of season-ending Achilles injuries to defensive starters Romeo Okwara and Jeff Okudah. There isn’t much hope that the pass defense can get much better without them, even with a dramatic defensive scheme change.

If you don’t have the right personnel, you can’t be competitive in this league.

Philadelphia at Detroit: Scoring Prediction

It’s hard to have faith in a 2-4 team, but the stats all point to Philadelphia having a dominant game on offense in this one.

Even though he hasn’t looked great in his last couple of showings, Jalen Hurts could look like an all-pro against a weak Lion’s secondary. In a passing-focused game plan, look for him to connect with DeVonta Smith for large chunks of yardage on vertical throws.

It might be enticing to bet on the Lions to post their first win of the season here, but I just don’t see it happening vs. a decent passing offense. I’d wait to bet on the Lions until they face a more run-oriented team.

Don’t be surprised if the Eagles reach the end zone four or five times on Sunday.
