In their Week 5 matchup, the Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) take to the road to face the Carolina Panthers (3-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The latest NFL odds for this game have the Panthers as 3.5-point favorites.
What are the chances of Nick Sirianni’s Eagles winning as the road underdog in Week 5?
Let’s find out.
Two Tough Losses Last Week
Both teams suffered tough losses last week. The Eagles lost at home to former head coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, 42-30.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts attempted 48 passes against the Chiefs, throwing for 387 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher with eight carries for 47 yards.
Although Hurts connected with eight different receivers, it was just too much reliance on one player. In the aftermath of their defeat, one of the only bright spots seems to be the team’s offensive line as they get ready to face the Panthers.
Carolina has allowed only 17.5 points per game thus far, which currently leads the NFC. They held firm against the Dallas Cowboys last week except for the third quarter, where they allowed 20 points.
That was a span where Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives. So does that mean Hurts and the Eagles should attempt over 50 passes against the Panthers in Week 5?
Eagles vs. Panthers
At the end of the game last week, quarterback Sam Darnold connected with wide receiver D.J. Moore for two red zone scores to bring the Panthers to within eight points of the Cowboys.
However, the Cowboys converted three first downs, including a Carolina penalty, to take a kneel and end the game.
Moore, a 2018 first-round draft pick, seems to be on pace to have the best season of his career. However, star running back Christian McCaffrey sat out against the Cowboys due to a hamstring injury in Week 3.
With McCaffrey out, it was the team’s only loss so far this season. So, if he can play this week, the Eagles will undoubtedly have their hands full.
In the second half against the Chiefs, the Eagles were within five points two times. But they could not stop quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the fourth quarter, including a 44-yard score.
The over-under total for the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Carolina Panthers currently rests at 45. However, I expect that to change if McCaffrey gets the start.
NFL Week 5: Can the Eagles Win?
The current point spread for the Eagles at +3.5 means that bettors believe the game is almost too close to call. However, the money line tells a different story.
The Eagles (+160) vs. Panthers (-190) puts the home team as the heavy favorite.
Can the Birds win as the underdog? That seems like an extremely tough task this week.
