Poland vs. Argentina Analysis

If there’s one word I’d use to describe Poland’s World Cup performance so far, it would be “stodgy.” Czeslaw Michniewicz’s team battled to a 0-0 draw with Mexico in their opening match, with a saved Robert Lewandowski penalty the only big chance of the match.

They did bounce back 2-0 against Saudi Arabia, and Lewandowski finally got his first World Cup goal. It wasn’t a mesmerizing performance, but it put them firmly in the top spot, and advancing is now well within their reach. 

Poland was lucky to win, with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s heroics being the difference. However, a win is a win, and no matter how it was achieved, Poland now only needs a draw against Argentina to make it through to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1986.

Argentina had a nightmare start to the World Cup with a humiliating 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia but went on to win 2-0 against Mexico to keep their hopes of advancing alive. 

Of course, Lionel Messi has been front and center of everything that Argentina has done.

Messi scored the only goal in their first game, and he scored one and assisted on the other in the win against Mexico. The talismanic striker is going to be hugely important if Argentina is going to win this game.

Saudi Arabia showed Poland how to win against the Albicelestes and because they only need a draw in this game, I see them using exactly the same blueprint. Poland will likely sit deep and keep a compact midfield and defense, getting the ball up to Lewandowski on the break.

Argentina finds it hard to break down opposition like that and was caught out on the break by Saudi Arabia. However, I think they will be far more aware of it this time. Lionel Scaloni knows that Poland will set up for a draw, so he will have to find a way to get through with some creativity and pace through players like Enzo Fernández.

This is going to be a cautious game, but the Argentinian team knows that anything but a win, they will go home. So, this could be a game for them to really let loose their attacking talent. 

There’s certainly a chance for a draw here, with Poland happy to sit back and defend deep, but I think Argentina will find a way through to take all three points.
