- Portugal won, while Uruguay drew in their opening fixture.
- Portugal’s defense struggled against Ghana.
- I expect an open match with both teams scoring in a tie.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first male player to score at five FIFA World Cups when his team saw out a narrow win against Ghana. On the other hand, Uruguay was held to a goalless draw against a disciplined South Korean side.
Can Portugal’s defense hold up against stronger opposition? Will Uruguay’s prolific strike force find the net in what’s bound to be a more open match?

Portugal vs. Uruguay Analysis
It took until the 65th minute for the match between Portugal and Ghana to come alive, and Ronaldo benefitted from a marginal decision and was awarded a penalty to make history.
Portugal, and Ronaldo in particular, had been unusually sloppy in front of goal and they were very nearly punished for their profligacy by a scrappy, determined Ghanian side. At 3-1 up, the contest looked dead and buried, only for Osman Bukari to pop up in the 89th minute with a goal.
The last few moments of the match were nervy for Portugal, who were lucky to get away with all three points when their young keeper’s mistake nearly landed Ghana an equalizer in the dying minutes.
Portugal will be happy with the win, but I do have concerns about the defense and how they will square up against a better attacking force.
Uruguay was frustrated by a dogged and disciplined South Korea. The South Americans were favorites going into this match but simply couldn’t break down Korea’s compact defensive system.

Worryingly, they also wasted their few chances on goal, hitting the woodwork twice.
I think this could be an exciting, end-to-end match. All of Portugal’s goals came from counterattacks, but I expect the Uruguayan defense to hold up much better than Ghana’s.
Portugal’s defenders had a game to forget, and they will be punished if they give the likes of Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez, and Edinson Cavani the same space that they allowed against Ghana.
This should be a fairly open game. I expect both sides to score here, but I do think they will share the points. I’m going with a tie result.
