We’re 11 weeks into the 2021-22 English Premier League and the top of the table is starting to look a lot more clear. Mind you we still have a way to go, and you never know what is going to happen in this league.
Let’s take a look at this weekend’s biggest matches and the Premier League betting odds for all the games over matchday 11.
Manchester United vs. Manchester City
United improved in their performance against Spurs after their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, however, they were poor against Atalanta in the Champions League again in midweek. United simply can’t seem to get their tactics right – whether that’s down to poor coaching, or a lack of effort on the players’ behalf. They lose their structure far too often and they will get punished against a side as slick as Manchester City. The Red Devils are a team filled to the brim with talented individuals and that’s exactly what they play like: Individuals. This is a team lacking in cohesion, teamwork and leadership, and they are going to have to do something spectacular if they want to take any points off of Manchester City at Old Trafford.
City, on the other hand, are a team filled with star players that put the badge before their egos. Pep Guardiola has managed to get a star-studded side to work for each other, and play selfless soccer, in order to get the best results that they can. Of course, they suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace last weekend, but their win in the Champions League showed that this hasn’t lingered with them too much. City has an embarrassment of attack-minded players in the midfield and upfront and I think this is going to be the source of United’s downfall.
United’s defense is in disarray – they don’t press with any urgency and if they give City’s midfielders and attackers too much time on the ball, they will be punished.
Prediction: Man United 0 – 2 Man City
Betting odds: Man United: +340 Tie: +290 Man City: -135
West Ham vs Liverpool
David Moyes has defied the soccer odds and done something with this West Ham side that no one would have thought possible. They are no longer a mid-table team, but genuine contenders for the top four spot who will be battling it out until the end of the season. In seasons gone by, a visit from an in-form Liverpool would have been a bad day at the office for the Hammers, but this team will be relishing the match. This is a cohesive unit with a tireless midfield that are playing some of the most attractive soccer in the league at the moment. West Ham might not have the riches and the star-studded lineup of the other clubs in the big four, but David Moyes is proving that you don’t need all that, and that his disastrous tenure at Man Utd was more of a reflection on the club’s state than his own style of management.
The Hammers do come up against a resurgent Liverpool, however, and this will probably be the truest test of this team. The Reds are back to their very best, putting five past Man United when they were only playing in second gear. They did suffer a shock 2-2 draw to Brighton on the weekend, but I don’t think that will slow them down too much as Mo Salah is simply unstoppable right now. In the victory over United, he became the first-ever opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford. He has scored 10 goals in 10 games for the Reds. Defensively, the Reds weren’t at their best against Brighton last week and this will have to be improved upon if they want to keep the West Ham attack quiet.
For me, this is going to be the game of the weekend. Expect a frenzied pace, some crunching tackles and exceptional soccer on show. Given the way both teams are playing, I’m going with the points being shared here.
Prediction: West Ham 2 – 2 Liverpool
Betting odds: West Ham: +350 Tie: +320 Liverpool: -145
