  • Around $4.5 billion was spent on transfers for the 2022-23 season in Europe & UK.
  • The Premier League spent an estimated $2.23 billion.
  • Man United’s $104.5 transfer for Antony was the window’s most expensive.

The 2022-23 summer transfer season was massive, and all of the game’s big hitters made waves in the market. The Premier League flexed its financial muscle and saw a whopping $2.23 billion spent on players, some of which will certainly impact Premier League betting odds for the Golden Boot award.

Chelsea spent the most money across both the Premier League and European soccer, with an outlay of over $270 million on new players. Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling, Koulidu Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella are some of the big names that moved to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Given their gigantic spend, Thomas Tuchel’s sacking on Sept. 7 and a slow start to the season, went against the EPL betting odds, which had Chelsea as strong contenders for the title.

Here’s a look at the top 20 most expensive transfers for the 2022-23 campaign, as well as the EPL clubs that spent the most on new players:

The Most Expensive Transfer of 2022-23: Antony to Man Utd

Brazilian winger Antony was an early transfer target for Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag. He played under ten Hag at Ajax, scoring 17 goals and providing 12 assists in two seasons under the Dutchman in the Eredivisie.

Ajax drove an incredibly tough transfer process with United, who landed the 22-year-old on the last day of the transfer window for $104.5 million. This is the second highest fee that the Red Devils have paid for a player (after Paul Pogba).

However, the Brazilian made an immediate impact and scored on his debut against Arsenal. Despite the pressure of his price tag, Antony looks like a good buy for the Red Devils, and his tenacity and tricky footwork will improve the soccer odds of the club making it into the Top Four this season.
