There were big expectations for the Raiders last season. They moved into a brand new, $2 billion stadium on the Las Vegas Strip and were in year three of Jon Gruden’s eye-popping 10-year, $100 million contract.
Despite the billions pumped into the team, they had a dismal 8-8 record and only won two games in their new stadium. They’re off to a good start so far this year, but if you’re looking to the future and want to bet on football, check out this look at the Raiders’ Super Bowl odds.
Why the Raiders Will Go to the Super Bowl
The Raiders have beat a good Ravens team and a solid Dolphins team at home and Pittsburgh on the road this year. While some might say they’re a smoke and mirrors team, they’ve shown that they have what it takes to have a winning season.
Statistically, Derek Carr is a good quarterback. He’s been with the Raiders his entire NFL career, but he’s had some tough luck. The only time the Raiders made the playoffs with him as the quarterback was when he had a gruesome leg injury towards the end of the season and couldn’t play in the post-season.
Carr has been looking to Darren Waller quite a bit this season too, and Gruden has called Waller “the best player I’ve ever coached.” He also has Henry Ruggs at receiver, giving him several red zone weapons.
He’s been their leader through their transition from Oakland to Las Vegas and has them off to a 3-1 start this year. One of the most significant issues with his tenure is that they’ve historically lacked a running game, but there is some optimism this season with Peyton Barber and Josh Jacobs.
Why the Raiders Won’t Go to the Super Bowl
That brings us to the arguments why they won’t go to the Super Bowl. Their defense is abysmal, and their secondary has struggled, allowing 25.8 completions per game. Although they added Casey Hayward in the offseason, he can’t carry their entire secondary. Their linebackers are also mediocre.
They lost to the Chargers after going scoreless for the entire first half of the game, and the offensive line couldn’t pull it together in the second half.
The Chargers showed that if you get physical with their receivers, you can slow them down. Unfortunately, this all might be too much for the Raiders to overcome.
All in all, despite being 3-1 going into Week 5, the Raiders aren’t inspiring a lot of confidence.
The Raiders’ Super Bowl Odds
The Raiders’ current Super Bowl odds sit at +5000, which aren’t the best but certainly aren’t the worst either. These odds put them tied for 15th in the league, but the season is still early.
They take on Chicago at home this week and will face Khalil Mack, who got traded right before the 2018 season in a head-scratching move by Gruden. Oddsmakers have them beating the Bears, but we’ll see.
They could always pull it together in the next few months or tank like they did last year. But, unfortunately, the fact that both of these are legitimate options doesn’t bode well for the Raiders making the Super Bowl.
Would I Put Bet on the Raiders?
The Raiders Super Bowl odds aren’t great, and although they have a winning season so far, I’m not sure that they can overcome their lack of a strong defense to make it to the post-season, let alone the Super Bowl. So I’d probably save this money and skip this bet.
