Cooper Kupp has had a year for the history books, and now he’s one game away from adding a Super Bowl championship to his remarkable season.

According to BetMGM’s Super Bowl prop bets, Kupp’s reception prop sits at over/under 8.5. With the Cincinnati Bengals likely to gameplan around denying him the ball, how much will Kupp be able to contribute in Super Bowl 56?

Kupp’s Playoff Success

Kupp’s dominance this season earned him the receiving triple crown. He’s the first player since 2005 to lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

He hasn’t slowed down in the playoffs, either. Kupp has amassed 386 receiving yards and four touchdowns in his three playoff games this year. He’s gone over his Super Bowl reception prop of 8.5 in two of the three games, with reception totals of five, nine, and 11.

Even though every one of the Los Angeles Rams opponents has been aware of how often quarterback Matt Stafford likes to throw to Kupp, they haven’t been able to stop the targets.

In the past two games, Kupp has received 11 and 14 targets. The only time he didn’t reach ten targets in the postseason was three games ago in the Wild Card round versus the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams won that game 34-11.

That won’t be the case against the Bengals, though; Stafford will need his favorite weapon if he wants to walk out of SoFi with a Super Bowl ring.

Will the Bengals’ Defense Slow Him Down?

Cincinnati will no doubt try to limit the number of receptions to Kupp. They may play a high-low coverage scheme against him with a cornerback and safety Jessie Bates III. The Bengals could also do what worked against Kansas City in the second half when they rushed three and used eight players in coverage.

Interestingly, Kupp had arguably the best game of his career against the Bengals in 2019, going for 220 yards and a touchdown. While most of the defense has changed since then, the Bengals have the same defensive coordinator they did in 2019, Lou Anarumo. Jessie Bates III was also the safety in that game.

Surprisingly, Kupp had only seven receptions in that game. This year, the Bengals have had similar results against other star receivers in the playoffs.

For example, Tyreek Hill only gathered seven receptions in the AFC Championship Game but had 78 yards (11.1 average). Before that, in the divisional round, A.J. Brown tallied 142 receiving yards but only caught five passes (28.4 average).

Super Bowl 56 Player Props: Cooper Kupp’s Receptions

Cooper Kupp will probably rack up many yards in this game, but I’m not sure about receptions. With the way the Bengals defense has played other top receivers in the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kupp had a big game but only tallied a handful of catches. That’s why I like the under on Kupp’s reception prop of 8.5.
