- The Netherlands are heavy favorites to beat Senegal.
- Senegal will struggle to score without Sadio Mane.
- The Netherlands should win, with Memphis Depay scoring a goal.
The second Group A match in the FIFA World Cup schedule is Senegal vs. Netherlands. Both teams are looking for more success than they had in 2018 when Senegal failed to make it out of the Group Stage, and the Netherlands failed to qualify for the tournament at all.
This year looks like a much brighter prospect, with Senegal coming off of winning AFCON and Netherlands storming to the UEFA Nations League finals.

Senegal vs. Netherlands Analysis
Senegal is the current African champion, and the hopes of an entire continent rest on Aliou Cissé’s team. The Lions of Teranga have a different feel about them this year, and they could go on a deep run.
Cissé normally deploys a rugged 4-3-3 system with an incredibly strong, complimentary defensive partnership of Abdou Diallo alongside Kalidou Koulibaly, with Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy between the posts.
The midfield is conservative, as Idrissa Gueye (Everton) and Cheikhou Kouyate (Nottingham Forest) are key to protecting the back line, but this means the midfield is not very deep.
Senegal only conceded two goals on their way to winning the AFCON title, but they struggled to break down tight teams. This will be even more difficult here, considering Sadio Mane is out for at least the first few games due to injury.

Louis van Gaal will lead the Netherlands in a tournament for the last time, and he’s bound to deploy a “safety in defense” system of 3-4-3. Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Man City’s Nathan Ake, and Ajax’s Jurrien Timber are a defense to be reckoned with, but there’s no lack of talent further up the pitch either.
The midfield is led by the talented Frenkie de Jong, and there’s also Memphis Depay, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Cody Gakpo, who are their main threats to score.
If Mane were on the pitch, I’d say this is a game that could go Senegal’s way, but without him, I just don’t see them breaking through the Netherlands’ defense.
I’m going with 2-0 to the Netherlands, with Depay getting on the scoresheet.
Senegal vs. Netherlands Game Results Odds:
- Match Result: Netherlands (-165)
- Draw No Bet: Netherlands (-500)
- Over/Under Goals: Under 2.5 (-145)
- Netherlands to Win and Senegal Not to Score: (+138)
- Memphis Depay to Score Anytime: (+130)
