There’s nothing better than better sitting down to enjoy the big game with a table full of snacks and a cold beverage or two for sports fans. But for many armchair quarterbacks, the game gets a little more exciting when you add NFL betting to the mix.
Placing a wager on your favorite team can make you root just a little bit harder for your squad, and if you’re lucky, they might reward you with a payout. Another great thing about sports betting is that it can turn a seemingly dull game into your own personal Super Bowl if you have a few wagers on the line.
But even some of the most avid sports fans might not know where to start when it comes to putting action on the game. So here’s a guide to help you get started.
Sign Up For BetMGM and Check the Promotions Page
It’s likely that if you’re a sports fanatic, you already do plenty of research about the teams you back and the leagues they play in. So why not put all that hard-earned knowledge to use and have it work in for favor?
The first step is to sign up at BetMGM’s sportsbook, register for an account, and make your first deposit. Make sure to check out the promotions page before you deposit. After that, you’re all set to start placing your bets.
You can make many bets at a sportsbook, and there’s some jargon to learn along the way. Below we’ll explain some of the essential betting terms that you’ll need to know.
Different Kinds of Bets
Betting can be a lot more nuanced than simply picking one team to beat the other, although you can do that as well. Here’s a look at the most popular bets you’ll need to know.
Money line
A money line bet is one of the most common bets that you can make, and it simply means that you are picking the team that you think will win the game. Here is an example of a typical money line offering:
New Orleans Saints (+125) at Tennessee Titans (-150)
This example shows that the Saints are playing at (or in) Tennessee and have underdog odds of +125. The +125 means that if you were to wager $100 and won, you would net +125 in profit. And if you were to take the Titans at -150, it means that you would have to wager $150 to net a $100 profit.
Point Spread
A point spread is a way of leveling the playing field between the two teams by having one team favored by a certain amount of points. Here’s an example:
Jacksonville Jaguars +10.5 (-110) at Indianapolis Colts -10.5 (-110)
In this situation, the Jags are 10.5 underdogs. So if you placed a wager on Jacksonville and the final score was 30-20 for the Colts, you would still win the bet. However, if it’s 31-20, you would lose.
Keep in mind that the sportsbook will take “juice” on your bet in the form of (-110). Meaning you would need to bet $110 to profit $100
Total
The total is the combined amount of points scored in the game. You can bet the over or the under of the combined score. Here’s an example:
Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys 54.5 (-110)
You would decide if you think the game’s total points would be higher or lower than 54.5 and place your bet. Once again, you would receive -110 odds on your wager.
Parlay bets
A parlay bet is when you bet on two or more teams on a single ticket. You need to win all of the games to get paid out, making it a riskier option. However, it can lead to a nice payout if you hit them all.
Futures bets
A futures bet is when a sportsbook offers bets that won’t be decided until the end of the season. These include betting on a team to win the Super Bowl or a player to win MVP.
Prop bets
Prop bets can be fun bets where you bet on specific aspects of a game, such as who will win a coin toss, how many touchdowns a player will score, etc.
