As we head into Week 8, the Buffalo Bills and defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied for the best Super Bowl odds in the league. Trailing just behind them are Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams.
Which one of these teams has the best chance of making it to the Super Bowl? Read on as we look at these three teams and what makes them legitimate championship contenders.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+500)
The Bucs have only one blemish on their record thus far, which was a Week 3 loss against the Rams in Los Angeles. However, they could have looked better in their Week 4 slim-margin victory over the Patriots as well in Tom Brady’s return to Foxborough.
The Bucs have played two games this season against other teams with decent 2022 Super Bowl odds. They defeated the Cowboys (+1100) 31-29 in Week 1 and lost 34-24 to the Rams (+800) in Week 3.
After seven games, the Bucs are averaging 423.4 yards on offense a game. That’s second behind only the Dallas Cowboys. They lead the league with an average of 324.3 passing yards per game as well. On defense, the Bucs only give up 332.1 yards per game on average. So far this season, the Bucs also have the best run defense in the league, averaging just 67.4 rushing yards per game.
Injuries may play a factor in the Bucs’ chances of repeating as Super Bowl champs this season. Rob Gronkowski (ribs) and Antonio Brown (ankle) have already missed games. Having a 44-year-old quarterback would generally cause concern for a team that wants to make a deep run, but Tom Brady isn’t a typical quarterback. His chances of going down to injury seem as slim as for a 21-year-old at this point.
Buffalo Bills (+500)
The Bills had a deep playoff run last season for the first time since the 1990s (when they lost four consecutive Super Bowls). Bills fans are hoping the experience Josh Allen and company gained last year will lead them to further success in the 2022 playoffs.
This season, the Bills have played two games against other teams with decent NFL Super Bowl odds. In Week 5, they defeated Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (+1600) 38-20, though we now know that the Chiefs aren’t the same team as last year. The Bills also dropped a close one to the Titans (+1400) in Week 6.
The Bills have the best defense in the league so far. They only give up an average of 270.2 yards per game. Their pass defense sits atop the league as well, averaging just 180.5 yards per game. In addition, they only give up 89.7 rushing yards per game, which is good for 6th place in the league. Derrick Henry did manage to find some holes when he rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns when the Titans beat the Bills 34-31 in Week 6, however, but Derrick Henry can run against anyone.
Los Angeles Rams (+800)
The LA Rams are certainly playing like contenders and currently have the 3rd best odds of winning Super Bowl LVI. Their offense is averaging 397.1 yards per game, good for 8th in the league. Their defense ranks 11th worst in the league, however, giving up 373.9 yards per game.
Much like the other contending teams, they’ve played two teams this season who also have decent Super Bowl betting odds. They fell to the undefeated Cardinals (+850) 37-20 in Week 4 but defeated the Bucs 34-24 in Week 3.
Where one might grow a little concerned about the Rams’ chances is in Matthew Stafford’s lack of playoff experience. He’s yet to win a playoff game in three attempts, but he’s never had this strong of a team around him.
