Matt Corral has brought life into this Ole Miss Rebels football team during the 2021 season, as the Rebels QB has led them to as high as a top 10 ranking.
As of now, BetMGM’s college football odds have Corral at +275 to win the Heisman Trophy.
If Corral wants to remain a contender for the award, he will have to put up impressive numbers every week. So, how many touchdowns can he throw in his Week 10 matchup vs. Liberty?
Matt Corral 2021 Stats
To get an idea of how well Matt Corral can do against Liberty, you have to look at how he has done in his other games this season. He is a Heisman Trophy candidate for a reason, with his past numbers below:
- Sept. 6 vs. Louisville – 381 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
- Sept. 11 vs. APSU – 281 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT
- Sept. 18 vs. Tulane – 335 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT
- Oct. 2 at Alabama – 213 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
- Oct. 9 vs. Arkansas – 287 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT
- Oct. 16 vs. Tennessee – 231 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
- Oct. 23 vs. LSU – 185 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
- Oct. 30 at Auburn – 289 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
Overall, he has 15 touchdown passes and just two interceptions on the season, which is an incredible ratio. But, of course, this is just Corral throwing the ball. He also has 519 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns on top of this.
His best games as a passer have come against non-conference opponents in the first three games of the season. Just focusing on those games, he averaged 332 passing yards and three TD passes per game.
This bodes well for Corral as he gets ready to face another non-conference opponent in Liberty. Still, the Flames will arguably be the most formidable team they have met outside of their conference this season.
Two of his toughest games came against Alabama and LSU, who held him to his two lowest passing yard totals of the season, and they only gave up one touchdown pass each. In addition, both teams limited Corral’s running, as he only ran for 27 yards combined in those two games. He usually averages 68 per game.
Comparing Liberty’s Defense
Another thing you have to note is how Liberty’s defense stacks up to other opponents that Ole miss has played.
If you take a look at the total defense rankings in the NCAA, you will see that Liberty is among the best defenses statistically that Ole Miss has faced. Liberty matches up, statistically, with Alabama.
Of course, the strength of schedule comes into play because while the stats back Liberty, Syracuse is the only team in a Power-5 conference that they have played, and they lost to them 24-21.
For reference, Syracuse ranks around the middle of the pack in total offense, while Ole Miss is a top-five team in the nation in that category.
How Many Touchdown Passes Will Corral Throw?
Matt Corral is someone I would not bet against when it comes to putting up numbers. However, based on the evidence above, at least two touchdown passes would be a decent prediction.
