Everybody loves an underdog, and that’s especially true when it comes to sports bettors. In a league as unpredictable as the NFL, each week provides numerous opportunities for bettors to back the underdog and pray for the upset.
Last week saw a few NFL betting upsets at the hands of the Bengals, Titans, and Colts, and you can rest assured that we can expect much of the same this week. So, with all of this upset money on the table, who will be the best NFL underdog bets in Week 8?
Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions (+135)
Stay with me for a second. Yes, I know that the Lions are 0-7 and have a -72-point differential. I also know that they’ve struggled with consistency over their first seven games. But when it comes to betting the underdog in the NFL, you need to take some risks.
One thing the Lions do have is heart, and they don’t have anything to lose. This year, they’ve shown their grit by hanging tough with some excellent teams like the Ravens and Rams, taking both of those contests to the end only to lose heartbreakingly.
Head Coach Dan Campbell has also shown that he’s willing to pull out all the stops. Last week he left it all on the field with not one but two fake punts, an onside kick, and a bold fourth-down call. You can likely expect the same kind of fearless play this week against a Philly team that looks out of sync.
New England Patriots (+190) at Los Angeles Chargers
Don’t look now, but things are starting to percolate in New England. It’s taken a minute, but the Brady-less Patriots are finally looking like they’re starting to come together. Rookie QB Mac Jones has exceeded expectations and continues to improve every week.
He’s coming off a solid performance against the Jets, where he went 24 for 36 for 307 yards and two TDs. New England’s run game is also picking up steam, which bodes well against the Chargers’ porous run defense.
Damien Harris is coming off back-to-back 100+ yard rushing games, while the Chargers were run over by Baltimore two weeks ago to the tune of 187 yards. So expect the Pats to run early and often in this one.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+140) at Cleveland Browns
This game is likely to be an ugly low-scoring affair, which is one of the reasons I think the underdog has a chance. The Browns will get star running back Nick Chubb back this week but remain pretty banged up, nonetheless.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield’s availability is questionable for Sunday’s contest, but the extent of his injury suggests it’s unlikely that he’ll suit up. However, Pittsburgh is coming off a bye week, which is good news for sports bettors.
The Steelers have won their last four games when coming out of a bye week, and they are also 3-0 against the Browns since 2002 when coming off a bye.
What NFL Underdog Bets Will Hit This Week?
While you’ll usually need a little bit of luck to nail your NFL underdog bets, there’s certainly ample opportunity for bettors this week. It all comes down to crunching the numbers, riding the momentum, and of course, a healthy dose of praying to the football gods.
These are three of my favorites of the week, but of course, there are bound to be others. Create your online betting account with BetMGM today to make your underdog picks.
