It’s never fun to bet on a blowout game that’s decided before halftime. Fortunately, over-under bets exist.
How does over-under betting work for NFL bets, you ask? It’s simple. Oddsmakers provide a point total for the game, and you pick whether you think the total will go over or under that number.
Here’s an over-under bet example: the point total for the Bears vs. Steelers game is 40 points. So if you bet the over and the final is 21-20, you win. Read on for a list of the top three over-under sports betting picks for Week 9.
Chicago Bears vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
With a point total of just 40, the Chicago Bears vs. Pittsburgh Steelers matchup features the lowest point total of the week. However, bears quarterback Justin Fields made a few spectacular plays on Sunday, which was notable because Chicago head coach Matt Nagy missed the game due to COVID-19 protocols.
With or without Nagy, Fields still has only thrown for over 200 yards once this season, and it happened against the 0-8 Detroit Lions. On the other side of the field, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be figuring things out after a 1-3 start. Pittsburgh’s defense has allowed 20 points or less in four straight games.
This point total is meager, but it’s low for a reason. Chicago’s offense is not built to score often, and Pittsburgh should be able to run the ball and control the clock en route to a low-scoring victory.
Buffalo Bills vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
On Sunday, the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills head to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars, and they’re favored by more than two touchdowns. The point total is the eye-catching number in this game, though, as it sits at 48.5.
The Bills have been favored by at least two touchdowns twice this season, against the Texans in Week 4 and last week against the Dolphins. While the Bills did cover the spread in both games, neither game went over 40 total points.
The Bills have had two blowout wins in which the point total did go over 48.5 points, but those were against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Football Team.
Both of these teams have much more offensive talent on their roster than the Jaguars do. I think the Bills can easily win by two scores, but it seems unlikely the Jaguars can score enough for over bettors to cash in.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Baltimore Ravens
The Minnesota Vikings seem only to score points when they have to. In the three games in which the Vikings’ defense has allowed 27 or more points, the offense has responded with 24 or more points.
The Vikings’ defense has held opponents below 20 points four times this season, and the offense scored less than 20 points in three of those games.
With Vikings’ defense end Danielle Hunter suffering a severe injury on Sunday, Minnesota will have a hard time containing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.
The point total for this game is set at 49.5, and I expect it to go over. The Vikings may give up plenty of points, but their offense seems capable of playing in shootout games when it has to.
Reviewing the Top Over-under Bets for Week 9
The NFL is an unpredictable league. With few exceptions, it’s hard to determine which team will win any given matchup. However, over-under bets provide an alternative way of placing sports bets, so you don’t have to pick a winner.
