Matchday 5 results
- Salzburg 3-1 Lokomotiv Moskva
Salzburg managed to keep their hopes of qualifying alive with an assured win over Lokomotiv Moskva. Mergim Berisha scored two first-half goals, before Moskva clawed one back through an Anton Miranchuk penalty. However, Salzburg claimed all three points when 18-year-old Karim Adeyemi scored late in the game.
- Bayern 1-1 Atlético de Madrid
Atlético looked like they were on their way to the knockout rounds courtesy of a Joao Felix goal. Playing against an under-strength Bayern side, it certainly seemed as if they would hold on for the win. Thomas Muller had other plans, however, and earned his side a draw with a well-taken penalty late in the game.
What's next?
Bayern Munich have already clinched qualification and top spot for Group A, so they won’t be too worried about their upcoming match against Lokomotiv Moscow. However, with just two points separating Salzburg and Atletico Madrid, both teams have everything to play for. This is a game that Atletico must draw or win to go through, whereas Salzburg can settle for nothing less but a win.

Position | Club | Points |
1. | Borussia Mönchengladbach | 8 |
2. | Shakhtar Donetsk | 7 |
3. | Real Madrid | 7 |
4. | Inter Milan | 5 |
Matchday 5 results
- Real Madrid 0-2 Shakhtar Donetsk
Looking at this group, no one would have pegged Real and Inter to be the bottom two, but here we are. Shakhtar Donetsk managed an incredible double over Real Madrid for the first time. Dentinho and Manor Solomon were the goalscorers and both were half-time substitutes. Real Madrid is at serious risk of not qualifying for the knockout rounds.
- Internazionale 3-2 Mönchengladbach
A brace from Romelu Lukaka and a rare goal from Matteo Darmian gave Inter Milan their first glimpse of qualification for the knockout rounds. This game had plenty of drama, with Ashley Young missing an absolute sitter late in the game to put the result out of reach. Alassane Plea caused all sorts of problems for Inter and was only denied a hat trick through VAR.
What’s next?
Just like Group H, this group is up for the taking with all four teams in with a shot for qualifications. Borussia Mönchengladbach take on Real Madrid with a win for either side guaranteeing qualification. However, the Germans would also qualify with a draw. Real would have to rely on Inter beating Shakhtar if they want to go through on a draw.
A win for Shakhtar means qualification, as well as a draw if Real don’t win their match. Inter simply have no choice but to win if they want to go through to the last 16.
Betting odds

Inter Milan: -350 Tie: +475 Shakhtar: +700

2. | Porto* | 10 |
3. | Olympiacos | 3 |
4. | Marseille | 3 |
Matchday 5 results
- Manchester City 0-0 Porto
Manchester City were hardly clinical in front of goal against Porto, but they did well to keep another clean sheet. Gabriel Jesus thought he had won the game for City, but Rodri was found to be offside in the build up to the goal. Both of these teams have qualified.
- Olympiacos 1-2 Marseille
There wasn’t much to play for in this match other than pride and it showed on the pitch. Marseille grabbed the 3 points through two penalties taken by Dimitri Payet after Mady Camara had drawn first blood for Olympiacos in the 33rd minute.
What’s next?
At the top of the table, both City and Porto have already qualified but they will be looking for wins to try and stake a claim on the first spot.
Olympiacos and Marseille are equal on three points and will mainly be engaged in damage control as they take on Porto and Man City respectively.

Group D

Position | Club | Points |
1. | Liverpool* | 12 |
2. | Atalanta | 8 |
3. | Ajax | 7 |
4. | Midtjylland | 1 |
Matchday 5 results
- Ajax 0-1 Liverpool
Young Curtis Jones was the star of the show when an injury-laden Liverpool took on Ajax needing to win to get qualification. Ajax spent most of the second half camped in the Liverpool goal, but debutant Caoimhin Kelleher did excellently to keep a clean sheet.
- Midtjylland 1-1 Atalanta
In a game that Atalanta should have taken advantage of to qualify, they could only manage a draw. The 1-1 scoreline gave Midtjylland their first point in the group stages. Atalanta were wasteful in front of goal and were made to regret their errors with a goal from Alexander Scholz. Cristian Romero’s looping header equalized for Atalanta, but despite unwavering pressure, they were unable to find the winner.
What’s next?
It’s all to play for in the middle of the table with Liverpool having qualified but Ajax and Atalanta just one point apart.
Liverpool will take on Midtjylland in a game that the Danes will hope to leave with some dignity. Liverpool have already guaranteed the top of their group, so it’s likely that they will rest some key players, which could open the match up a bit.
Atalanta and Ajax square off in a must-win match for Ajax—Atalanta will progress with a draw. This is going to be a fast-paced, feisty affair that is going to be exciting to watch.

Group E

Position | Club | Points |
1. | Chelsea* | 13 |
2. | Sevilla* | 10 |
3. | Krasnodar | 4 |
4. | Rennes | 1 |
Matchday 5 results
- Chelsea 4-0 Sevilla
There isn’t much to report on about this match, other than the fact that it was the Olivier Giroud show. The in-form striker scored all four goals and helped to take Chelsea above Sevilla to top spot. Both teams have qualified for the knockout round.
- Rennes 0-1 Krasnodar
Once again, this wasn’t the match that fans were going to flock to watch, but remember that the third-placed team will go into the Europa League. Renner really should have won this game, but a goal from Dennis Berg in the 71st minute won the game for the Russians.
What’s next?
All that’s left in this group is for Sevilla or Chelsea to cement top spot. Chelsea takes on Krasnodar in what should be a win. The Russians have shown that they can play a physical game, so Chelsea must be willing to put in the hard work.
Rennes don’t have a lot to play for in this game and they will probably just look to end off the tournament with a bit of pride by getting another point to their tally.
Betting odds
Chelsea: -275 Tie: +400 Krasnodar: +650
Sevilla: +140 Tie: +225 Rennes: +200

2. | Lazio | 9 |
3. | Brugge | 7 |
4. | Zenit | 1 |
Matchday 5 results
- Zenit 0-3 Club Brugge
Brugge kept qualification within grasp with a comfortable win over Zenit. Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring, with Hans Vanaken scoring the second, and Noa Lang putting the game out of reach.
- Lazio 1-1 Dortmund
Despite playing without talismanic striker Halaand, Dortmund were able to grab a point and safely qualify for the knockout rounds. Raphaël Guerreiro put Dortmund in front in the 44th minute of the match, but a controversial penalty, which was undoubtedly a dive, was awarded to Lazio, with Ciro Immobile slotting home the winner.
What’s next?
With Dortmund qualified, all that’s left to do is get the win to guarantee the top spot. They take on Zenit in what should be a straightforward win.
On the other hand, Lazio and Brugge have everything to play for with just two points separating them. Both of these teams are going to play to win at all costs.

Matchday 5 results
- Dynamo Kyiv 0-3 Juventus
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th career goal when Juventus beat Kyiv 3-0 to qualify for the last 16. Chiesa had opened the scoring, with Ronaldo scoring the second, and Morata made it three to put the game to bed.
- Barcelona 3-0 Ferencváros
Having already qualified for the last 16, no one would have blamed the Spanish giants for taking their foot off the peddle a bit. But Griezmann, Braithwaite, and Dembélé all got onto the score sheet to ensure that their team will finish on top of the group.
What’s next?
Juventus and Barcelona have safely qualified for the last 16, but will both be looking for a win, or just a point in Barca’s case, to try and get the top spot. They will face each other in what is set to be a mouthwatering match between two incredibly in-form teams.
Kyiv and Ferencváros will battle it out for the third spot, which will take one of the teams through to the Europa League.

4. | Istanbul Basaksehir | 3 |
Matchday 5 results
- PSG 2-1 Manchester United
United simply had to draw to proceed to the last 16, but they failed to do so on a torrid night at Old Trafford. Neymar scored early in the first half and Marcus Rashford provided the equalizer before half-time. Anthony Martial missed a clear shot to take the Red Devils in front, at the beginning of the second half, and United’s wastefulness in front of goal came back to haunt them with Marquinhos and Neymar adding two more goals to give the visitors all three points.
- Leipzig 4-3 İstanbul Başakşehir
As we saw against Manchester United, Başakşehir has the ability to take on big teams and they deserved to leave with a point from this game. Despite a spirited display from the Turkish side, they were beaten by a late goal from Alexander Sørloth, after they had looked to take a point courtesy of an İrfan Can Kahveci hat trick.
What’s next?
This is undoubtedly the closest and most exciting group in the Champions League as we go into the last round of group stage games and the top two spots are there for the taking. Manchester United need just a point when they take on RB Leipzig next week, but who knows what team will turn up.
PSG are up against a spirited İstanbul Başakşehir in their last game and they will want to take all three points to ensure qualification.
Betting odds
RB Leipzig vs. Manchester United
RB Leipzig: +145 Tie: +260 Manchester United: +160
PSG: -750 Tie: +700 İstanbul Başakşehir: +1,600
