  • Shakur Stevenson defends his WBC World Lightweight title for the first time against Artem Harutyunyan.
  • Both Stevenson and Harutyunyan were former Olympic medalists.
  • Stevenson is the -2500 betting favorite, and Harutyunyan is the +1100 betting underdog.

Two former Olympic medalists will collide this weekend inside the Prudential Center in Newark for the WBC World Lightweight title, as defending champion Shakur Stevenson welcomes the challenge of Artem Harutyunyan.

Because of his undefeated record and championship pedigree, Stevenson will head into the match as the heavy -2500 favorite at BetMGM’s sportsbook. Meanwhile, Harutyunyan will try to defy the boxing odds stacked against him, as he’s the +1100 betting underdog.

Shakur Stevenson Recent Fight Results

Stevenson was a former silver medalist in the 2016 Rio Games before becoming a professional boxer. He debuted in April 2017 as a featherweight, and eventually won the WBO World Featherweight title in October 2019.

Since then, he has moved up in weight and captured the WBC World Super Featherweight and WBO World Super Featherweight titles. His latest victory was against Edwin De Los Santos in November, making him a three-division world champion after he secured the vacant WBC lightweight belt with a unanimous decision win.

Artem Harutyunyan Recent Fight Results

Like Stevenson, Harutyunyan was also a former Olympic medalist in the 2016 Rio Games, but he competed in the heavier weight class. He fought Avelino Vazquez in his first professional fight in November 2017 and has since won 11 straight fights.

During this stretch, Harutyunyan also captured multiple minor titles, such as the BDB International Super Lightweight title, the IBO Continental Super Lightweight title, and the WBC International Lightweight title. His previous fight was a unanimous decision loss from Frank Martin in July 2023.

Shakur Stevenson vs. Artem Harutyunyan: Fight Analysis

There isn’t much difference between Stevenson and Harutyunyan in terms of the tale of the tape, as their physical attributes are almost identical. But the most intriguing factor is their age, as Stevenson is six years younger than Harutyunyan.

In terms of style, both love to fight on the outside and utilize their full reach against their opponents. However, they have a different stance because Stevenson fights as a southpaw, and Harutyunyan sports an orthodox stance. A clash of heads is possible during the match, especially when they throw punches simultaneously.

Stevenson’s key to victory is to become the aggressor and march forward to pressure his German opponent. This way, he could string up combinations and find his rhythm fast. Additionally, this will remove his deficiency in head movement, as he only slips his head backwards.

Meanwhile, Harutyunyan’s primary fight plan is to lure the American champion forward to leave himself open for counters. This way, he can load up on his check hooks and straight punches to potentially catch him in the pocket. He should exploit the lack of head movement of Stevenson.

But Stevenson may be a level above Harutyunyan due to his world title experience and has fought several top-flight fighters. This championship pedigree of the former Olympic silver medalist will be evident on fight night. Furthermore, Stevenson wants a dominant victory to officially book a huge fight with Gervonta Davis.
